I respect the optimism, but Neighbours isn't on the radar...
If Channel 5 can't afford it, how on earth do people expect a channel with a tiny fraction of the audience and viewership to be able to?
Remember when they poached Richard & Judy and how well that went? And that's a show which would have cost a fraction to make of what Neighbours does.

Yes there are a couple of weaker brands but you don't compromise the stronger brands of Dave, Alibi and Drama to fix that.

W is such a strange and silly name for a TV channel. Yes, so is Dave but they made it work and it turned out to be very clever. What have they ever done similarly with W to match? Not a thing. Guess they could go with Jane then. Ultimately though it seems a rather nothing channel with very little direction or USP.
Personally think Alibi would be a better addition to Freeview - at least that has a clear programming agenda, and throughout the day too the focus remains rather than filling hours with losely linked docusoaps or classic comedies.

UK Gold, UK Drama are two easy ones to rename but then again we're back to what on earth to call 'W' as UK W or UKTV W is terrible....(as bad as UKTV G2+1)!
Another easy one, Eden to UK Earth, based on BBC Earth branding, Yesterday could be UK Knowledge....oh here's a thought how about UKTV First based on BBC First for W? UK Dave?

UK G2 became Dave so maybe W becomes something more substantial, UK Bright Ideas anyone?

Isn't Freeview supposed to be banning these 1-2 hour +1 services?

I always thought that Richard and Judy didn't really know what they were moving to. They joined for launch and I remember Richard saying that the move to digital TV made sense as 'all TV will be digital soon'. Problem was that Watch was a pay TV channel so only available to a fraction of their channel 4 audience.
If it had been in Freeview then things might have been different
There was a perfectly valid reason to create Watch/W, UK Gold was a bit too full, and had a lot of new content, but the channel’s main selling point was comedy, the split was to allow Gold to concentrate on comedy and Watch to take the rest of the output and to be a BBC1 type channel. That’s all very well but I think they like Richard and Judy didn’t know what to do with it. It seems to have found it’s niche now after various relaunches, but it’s not the UK Gold overflow it was back in 2008.
Makes up heavily for what happened with Really being divested to Discovery. W would benefit from being on Freeview, seemed odd to me that its been on Pay TV for as long as it has been.
Also, I can't imagine Sky paying that much for a couple of extra pay TV channels at this point beyond their own and the most successful ones like Gold, MTV and Comedy Central, the market has roundly changed since then

Have I gone mad, wasn't Gold once FTA that then went paid?
Pretty sure it's always been a pay channel. Might have been FTA back in 1992, but it certainly wasn't when sky multichannels launched in 1993.

Are you thinking of the time when UKTV Gold/G.O.L.D was on the Freeview epg ch 17, but you had to subscribe to top-up tv to watch.
Same for UKTV Style and possibly UKTV Food on the Freeview epg but you needed to pay top-up tv.

Worth noting that the exact wording of the proposal regarding min hours was...
"Increase the minimum broadcast hours requirement for any new channel launching on the platform to six hours per day"
...which seems to imply that it won't affect any existing channels.

What's the point of those 2 hour channels though?
CameronYoung post_id=68868 time= user_id=1509 Wrote:What's the point of those 2 hour channels though?
Blocking, getting the highest channel number as possible. CCXTV and more appropriately Merit are good examples of when a broadcaster swaps a service puts it high up on the EPG and then sell it off to someone else, solely for the channel number/slot.
Slightly off-topic, but I think it's worth noting how outdated the UKTV channel websites are. The website for 'w' (except for having a rather confusing URL!) is very cluttered and frankly has little on it of interest. You'd think that, if UKTV are looking to expand the prominence of W by making it free-to-air (and maybe by putting it on Freeview), they'd invest in a much stronger online presence first!
