Premier League 2021-2 Season - Television
Brekkie post_id=60554 time= user_id=976 Wrote:Obviously next year the World Cup messes things up anyway but presumably when Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday there isnt usually a fixture list then. Common sense would be for the games to be scheduled on the 26th/27th, 29th/30th and 1st/2nd, trying to keep the same teams to the second day of the schedule.

Boxing Day falling on a Monday is always the most complicated, because it also means there's a full fixture list on New Year's Eve for the only time because it's a Saturday, and the challenge has always been fitting in another round with all the teams playing on Monday and Saturday.

It's happened four times before in the Premier League era. In 1994 it was the last time that teams played consecutive days with matches on both 26th and 27th. Many matches were moved from the latter to the 28th but Spurs, Palace and Norwich all played two days running. Indeed The Knowledge on the Guardian website mentioned this the other day as Norwich were sitting pretty in the top half of the table but then lost both of those matches heavily and never seemed to recover and were eventually relegated.

In 2005 there was a full fixture list on Wednesday 29th. This wasn't very good, though, because as it wasn't a Bank Holiday they all had to be evening kick-offs and the fixtures hadn't been scheduled very sympathetically, with Newcastle fans having to go to Charlton, which was then called off a few hours before kick-off because of a frozen pitch. The other problem with that was that because every team was also playing on Monday and Saturday, there was no opportunity to move any of them to another day so they all kicked off at the same time and Sky could only show one game. I know the more fixtures that kick off at the same time the better, but it was no good from a TV perspective.

In 2011 the additional round was the week before Christmas, the midweek starting 20th December. I thought this was quite a good idea because it meant it could be spread over three days, with Chelsea vs Spurs on Thursday 22nd, with no knock-on effect because nobody was playing again until the Monday. But it meant fans having to travel to evening kick-offs the week before Christmas which again was seemingly considered a major inconvenience. So the last time the days fell like that, in 2016, that whole round wasn't played at Christmas at all and they had an additional midweek round in April, I think. But the problem is, of course, you have to squeeze it in somewhere, because you lose an entire weekend round when Christmas Eve is a Saturday.

Of course in previous years when the days have fallen like they have this year, there would usually be another round of fixtures on Monday 3rd January, with teams playing twice in three days again. But I don't envy the Premier League in having to schedule these rounds, because from a club's perspective it would be better for them to all play today, but from a fans' perspective it would be better if they all played yesterday because it was a Bank Holiday and they could be 3pm kick-offs, rather than having to go to evening games during Christmas week. We hear plenty about how fans are disenfranchised and when they schedule matches at times that are most convenient for fans, it then becomes inconvenient for the clubs.

At the moment the final game in the league is May 22 - England play in the Nations Cup 4th June (the first set of games that round being 2nd June). There isn't really any further room at the end of the season.

Well, if they’re having the players involved in ADCON off for 3 GWs then surely it’d be fine for one game.

Then again, don’t think Klopp would be the biggest fan (‘It’s unfair because Burnley have no international players’ etc.)

I should added that the weekend between the end of the league and the start of the Nations Cup is Champions League Final Weekend - so one can't have the final round of the league on a weekend where up to two teams can't play, given that all teams have to play simultaneously.

The previous two midweeks are the Europa and the UEFA Conference League finals. The previous weekend is the FA Cup Final, so two teams can't play.
Any thoughts on the camera angle as used by Prime on the Leicester v Liverpool penalty last night? I quite like it but I think when the penalty was missed it should have cut to the main camera. Not gone down well in Twitter Land.

There is no way teams will agree to play without all their European international players. And there is no way UEFA will allow clubs to refuse to release players. And the nations league is important for future qualifications so the FA won’t want a weakened team and make qualification for Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup more difficult.

I like that from every angle. Big Grin

Don't get what is different about it - penalties are usually shown from behind the kicker and though this might be a bit of a higher shot than normal not too different really.

Works for me, perhaps fortunate that the rebound fell in a way that was also well framed? Nothing worth twisting over in any case!
Apparently on the Watford app it says that Palace will be on 5th Jan. Villa website says Burnley have their game with Villa on 12th Jan.

Neither of them yet confirmed it seems. Pushing it to confirm Watford v Palace.
Leicester v Norwich postponed from 3pm on Saturday.

I can the 2025 broadcasting rights process triggering a lot of debate about the schedule and if the amount of teams in the league should be reduced or if a Christmas break should be implemented.
A look at some of the wiring involved in getting Amazon's PL coverage on air last night (plus the world feed and any international rights-holders who are on-site):

IMO AZPV have finally reached their potential with this, albeit shortened, set of fixtures, excellent coverage and technical aspects. Zero issues for me across all three evenings.

I could easily adapt to seeing more Premier League coverage from them from 2025 onwards. I hope they resolve to take this to another level. Maybe retaining these two matchdays and grabbing one or two other packs. BT/Discovery or DAZN surely must be vulnerable to AZ going forwards.

I agree the product has been of high quality.

My concern when I first learned of Amazon getting the rights would be the potential for buffering, constantly changing picture quality, and the potential for such a delay that I'd get app alerts of goals before seeing them on screen.

No such issues have happened thus far.

I can see that, if there has been a marked uptake in "Prime Memberships" in the UK as a result, they would aim for possibly BT Sport's rights - especially given they are up for sale.

My only concern would be that if they end up offering more games in the UK, it would turn into a bolt-on to a Prime Membership, and not the current £7.99 a month.

I’ve had issues this week with picture dropout (on a symmetric gigabit connection) which was a little disappointing, but otherwise it has been good.
I suspect that any future rights expansion would result in a price hike, as you suggest.
I also get a good picture from Amazon, but not via all the outlets I have. The apps on Sky Q and my LG TV are as good as broadcast, and both are HDR for the main match of the day.

However, Virgin Media (V6 on TIVO software), Roku, and Chromecast all are lower quality - mainly frame rate related from the look of things. They need to ensure that all of the apps are as good as the first two mentioned.
