Have you ever appeared on Television?

I have been on TV accidentally. A couple years ago around 2019, I went back to my hometown in North Wales. They were filming a show for Quest (I forget the name) and the camera caught my car.

My grandfather has had multiple interviews on S4C, my mother was on a hairdressing documentary on S4C, and my little sister has had an interview on Newsround.

You get a glimpse of me in the standing area at the London 2012 opening ceremony during the pre-show as Hugh Edwards walks past the crowd. My mobile went mad for 5 minutes after that with friends and relatives messaging me saying they've seen me on TV.

I was on a well known kids programme and I’m still waiting for my badge!

not sure how I forgot this one in my earlier post in this thread - I was on BBC One (for about a second), and held a world record (for about a week), and got a Blue Peter badge (which I still have) for my participation in this:

I've always wondered about being interviewed for the news, do they prep you at all before you go on camera?

How were the presenters?

Pretty laid back, by the looks of things.

Does being in the audience count? If it does, then I was on television twice.

Never been a full participant in any show, but I can be seen gurning like a loon in various audience/studio shots on QI, The One Show, 2x Eurovision: You Decide shows, a Lottery Live show in the 90s and others I forget in the mists of time. Oh, and I'm very audible on the laughter of an episode of Miranda, mainly because I was literally one of about five men in the whole audience that night!

The One Show was the best though, as I was a studio guest of the star that night, Gloria Estefan, and I came back to my phone after the show, and various people had "helpfully" texted me to check I knew she was on - only to text back ten minutes later "Ah. You definitely knew then!" when I could be seen in the closing moments, clapping like a seal... Big Grin

When I got part of my fizzog and the back of my head on TV (albeit in the back of a Midlands Today News report/feature a couple of years ago), the person they were interviewing for a feature already knew what they were there to talk about.

They needed somebody to "do" something in the background so yours truly just had to sit there and play with a machine for a bit behind them while the interviewee talked (he spoke for best part of twenty minutes and the report only used about a minute if that). Many of the establishing/arty-farty shots of the interviewee interacting with me were done without my being aware the camera was even running.

Its amazing to think how much of this sort of stuff is actually planned to an extent, unlike when you wander around on the street, stick a microphone in the face of somebody passing and say "excuse me sir, what do you think about ?" and hope you don't get told to f off.

It always amazes me that reporters are able to get anyone to appear on camera at all especially in London where ignoring someone on the street is a skill in itself.

In my days as a radio reporter, I found after a while, you’d gain a bit of a sixth sense in picking out the kind of people who’d be prepared to talk to you when collecting vox pops.

I also found wandering around with a microphone meant some people would look at me, so making that initial eye contact was usually quite easy - I’d imagine the effect would be greater if you’ve got a TV camera with you too.

Mind you, I never tried in London.

Back on topic, and I did once manage to get on News At Ten, BBC Nine O’ Clock News, Sky News, Calendar and Look North all on the same day when reporting for Radio Leeds outside Leeds Crown Court following a high-profile trial.

I had a very important role in an Arena special about Spitting Image and shared screen time with the legend that is John Lloyd.

I've been on Television Three Times, on Three different Channels:

The First time was in 2006, on BBC Breakfast. My school was featured on a News Report about Male Teachers. My Year 4 Teacher was interviewed, so was the other Year 4 Teacher, the Cool Teacher from Year 5, and my Mum as well. I was just in the background.

The Second Time was on Channel 4, when I appeared in the background of an episode of The Undatables. My friend, Charlotte, was the featured subject, and a few people sat in the background of her, while I was in University. Its a blink and you'll miss it, but I remember it.

The final time was 2017, and it was on ITV Granada Reports. I was part of the audience for the Liverpool City Mayoral Debate. If its on Youtube, I am the fat bloke with the baby face, asking Steve Rotherham about spending in other parts of the city region, as someone who lives in the Knowsley section of the Liverpool City Region. On a tangent, Carl Cashman answered the question quite well, and the debate was cut down by Granada, for obvious reasons. Shame really, it got heated. Lucy Meacock was lovely too.
