W (Channel) Discussion

Yeah, this does look pretty basic. But what's so confusing about w.uktv.co.uk?

The only time I use any of the UKTV channel websites is to check the tv schedule which is basic, but still does the job.

And there are plenty of other places to check TV schedules. I can’t see the UKTV channel websites attracting a lot of traffic, and I doubt they’re a particularly important part of their business plan.

TV channel websites aren't what they were now anyway - basically their on demand player and a schedule if you're lucky.

Yeah, I use the Radio Times website or the TV listings pages in a newspaper for that. And of course, you can just look at the EPG. I doubt many people go to channel websites to check the schedule, they'd be more likely to want to check all available services at once, which you can on those other sources.

Usually, channels now often just update their social media, it isn't a few years ago where updating the site so frequently is their priority. Look at Dave's Twitter, their wit you often forget is from a TV channel, in similar vein to Adult Swim bumpers.
Also known as "Allanbuzzy" on other places.

So UKTV have received their OFCOM licence today for 'W' to broadcast on DTT Freeview.

As the licence is under the W name, does this suggest UKTV have no plans for a rebrand to a better name for this channel? If between now and launch, they reveal a new brand name for the channel, I guess the licence will have to be amended before launching?
"From today you'll hear some new voices when you're watching UTV, as for the time being we're handing over to our colleagues at ITV, but rest assured Julian and I will be back with you as soon as possible"

Its good that it is coming to freeview, but what about Freesat? Will that not be another service W should join? I do agree about the name 'W', it and its predecessor 'Watch' are very generic names. Watch is a verb, not a name. And W is a letter. Calling it UKTV would be a start, but I don't know.

Your teaser aside, this is where I do go for TV news, so either way I'll be here.

Given that Freesat is part of Freeview's business now, I would imagine that adding your channel to Freesat is now automatically discussed when adding a channel to Freview to discuss Freesat and a lot easier process.

What's the resolution of W SD currently on 28.2 East as the FTA versions of the UKTV channels are awful.

I can't check W itself, but the FTA UKTV channels on satellite appear to be 720x576. It's the low bitrate MPEG-2 that really pulverises the picture quality.

W, including it's +1 channel, will go FTA on satellite from next week.
