It could be a very big curveball thrown by Sky - Sky Magical, Britain's first ever 24 hour magic TV channel, filled with archive programmes from Paul Daniels to David Copperfield to new programming from Penn and Teller, Derren Brown etc.

Think it's far more likely to be this new box I keep hearing people from Sky talking about in hushed tones. (I don't know anything about it, but the "Sky Q over IP" thing has been rumoured for ages)

Magical suggests a new way of doing things that is clever and minus something previously required, and so Sky without a dish fits that description perfectly. Branding does not.

Only thing I can think of when they’ve done something similar previously though is when they hyped up what ended up being a Sky-branded sound bar, so prepare for it to be a let down as well.

I would hazard a guess this is Sky through the internet without a dish and they will call it either Sky X (like Australia), Sky Q IP (like Germany) or maybe something new, like Sky P (sounds like IP, which is what it is, Sky over IP, geddit?!) :lol: :lol:

Why would they go to this extent to build hype over a logo? If Sky gave a toss about people like us, they'd have given Sky One an honourable exit.

I'm not sure why people are ignoring the Arthur C Clarke quote at the beginning of the trailer posted at the beginning of this thread, referring to 'sufficiently advanced technology'. It's not talking about 'sufficiently advanced branding' for goodness sake! This is clearly going to be a new tech-based service.

Given the word 'magic' is in a very stylised font too, I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually the logo, and whatever it is will be called Sky Magic.

There is an article by Alistair Gray in the FT this morning that is possibly relevant to this discussion. It’s obviously behind the FT’s paywall, but here are the first three paragraphs:

Sky is preparing to launch its own smart televisions in one of the company’s boldest moves yet to win viewers in an intensifying battle with streaming services.

The UK-based broadcaster, which has 23m customers in six European countries, could announce the deepening push into hardware as early as next month, said people with knowledge of the plans.

The smart TVs would mark a significant step up from Sky’s existing set-top box device, Sky Q, which aggregates content from providers such as Netflix and Disney, as well as Sky, on a single platform.

The smart TV theory isn't all that "magical" but I suppose it's the job of marketing people to oversell something. I'm personally holding out for an IPTV announcement but I can see it being something a little less impressive.

How early do Sky Movies usually launch their Christmas channel?

I never really liked the name "Sky Cinema". Sky Movies rolls off the tongue more nicely, so it's kinda funny you still call it Sky Movies.

That's like if Sky Sports was renamed "Sky Stadium". Welcome to Sky Stadium Main Event, just doesn't work does it?

If it is a dish-less service i wonder if it’ll be any cheaper - I genuinely wonder how things are going with them sales wise? My parents have had Sky for something like 25 or so years and they’ve just cancelled it in favour of streaming things on Netflix and Prime etc. and I don’t know many people with it at all now - I really do wonder how things are going with them and if there’s a expiry date for them soon.
