Yeah, I hope they do so at least. Whilst the original incarnation of the 2013 (current) set had its flaws, it really had that sense of warmth, but two years later they undid so with the much whiter style because of viewer complaints. The rest, as it says, it's history.
Speaking of Today, but in another topic not related to the set, Al Roker's predecessor as weatherman, Willard Scott, has died at 87. He was known for creating the style of a comedic weatherman which has since become a standard of most American breakfast shows (mostly because he's credited for creating the main character of a fast food chain), as well as for his antics (including heavily using props and costumes during many holidays), for his forecasts done from the road, and for traditionally acknowledging the birthdays of centenarian people. He retired in 1996, being succeded by Roker, but Scott covered when he was away (a practice which would become superseded after NBCU bought The Weather Channel in 2008, using instead its meteorologists as cover), until retiring completely in 2015, after which the road across Rockefeller Center became known as Willard Scott Way.

Given that the graphics changes in May brought in a new colour scheme, including quite a cold looking blue and a very bright yellow, I can't see today's changes (which will likely be designed to go with the new graphics) bringing any feeling of 'warmth' to Studio 1A. I think the 'America's living room' phase has been and gone. Still, less than 2 hours to go - we'll have to wait and see

First look at some changes made. A new desk that looks smaller and a departure from the roundtable layout used previously. In addition, appears to be more ‘curves’ in the studio design.

Kind of weird to move it to 1A, the current 3C set wasn't that old. Wonder if this is permeant permeant or because of the work being done at 3A (MSNBC) they had to move out for awhile, or is MSNBC getting 3C? (I'm wondering) It would be like when CBS moved the Evening News to This Morning studio until Norah took it Washington D.C

The permanent Studio 1A for Nightly News is too wide for American television, the design that usually only see at news studios that influenced by European broadcasters (ex. BBC)

I think it looks great, and demonstrates perfectly the high versatility of Studio 1A. The only part of the set that can’t be changed to suit the programme is the glass sculpture, which can easily be avoided with camera shots. I think the multiple areas of the studio really suits Nightly. Just two things:
1. They’ve gone to the effort of moving the desk and adapting it to suit Nightly (by covering the Today logo), but unless I’m mistaken, Lester didn’t sit at it at all during the broadcast.
2. I really don’t like the new flooring around the video wall. Whilst the rest of the studio has been modernised, the new flooring looks old fashioned in my opinion.
They definitely need some new opening titles now to go with that. The current ones just look ‘temporary’ in my view as if they weren’t meant to be permanent (but have been in place for a while).

I think the new NBC NIGHTLY look at Studio 1 looks great. And its certainly moving in the right direction as far as the graphics. Some complained that the new Today Studio is all screens.....this is the reason why. NBC is has for years mastered lighting and the lighting change to 1A really shows the versatility of this studio. The darker lighting looks great for Nightly. The floor looks great. A plain floor would look awful. This marbled/wooden adds visual texture and is textbook NBC. THey are in a legacy art deco structure, Rockefeller Center, not a spaceship. The floor grounds the space and gives it a sense of permanence and it warms the space from being too white and clinical. Hopefully they will get rid of the stop-gap Open. I never liked it. But the new transition and in-studio elements look great on camera. Im liking it.

Marble seems to be becoming a bit of a theme for NBC News - it's also on the floor of the new Meet The Press studio. Unusual for news, but I like it.
I think Nightly works really well in 1A. I'm particularly impressed that they've even found a way to use the edge of the glass Today logo in some shots, without it looking like the Today logo.
My only beef is the unused desk in front of the video wall. They had one in the old studio too, and I just don't get it - if they're not going to use it, why is it there?
