NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, Affiliates and TODAY

I created a thread like this on TVF a few years ago, designed to act like the CNN one did. Thought I'd relaunch it here due the MSNBC graphics refresh.

Earlier, as posted on TVF, MSNBC soft-launched some new graphics. Haven't got any screenshots at the moment, but they've gone for a flat, less 'in-your-face' style.

As much as I recognise that the different divisions of NBC News are basically separate from each other, despite being under the same corporate umbrella, I'd like to see them at least attempt a shared, cohesive graphics package.

They're certainly more discreet than before. This one is fairly similar to CNN, what with the black text on a white background, with a red line at the end and red box above.

But I like how, unlike CNN, they completely integrate with the logo and the box underneath.

The name straps look quite nice and it seems they add a network logo for their own staff reporters - which is a bit needless and distracting, but hey:

Some of the straps look quite wordy and a bit tl;dr, like this one below - but maybe they've always been like that?

Is this to make up for the fact they don't seem to have a ticker? In fact, has MSNBC used a ticker in recent years?

It looks like this is part of a wider rebrand of daytime programming. This article suggests there is a 'dark mode' to the graphics too:

HEre are some more images from the TVNewers article. I think it was a smart move to distance themselves from the "LIVE" moniker since FNC decided to start using it more. Especially since opinnion is now all over the their dayside programming which used to be reserved for their "news". It was smart of MSNBC and NBC is make a clear distinction. I always hated the font they use in the MSNBC logo.

Ooh, that headlines round-up looks quite nice. I like the transition from presenter name to headlines.

This look leans heavily towards the NBC NEWS NOW graphic look.

I like how many posts are now being simulcast on two forums.

Opener for Stephanie Ruhle Reports - don't know what to make of the blue & yellow theme, much prefer the red, white & black used for Morning Joe

No more financial market data (which used to be under the logo) by the looks of it.

The box under the logo is certainly pulling its weight, though, alternating between the show name and the 'live' bug and clock.

It's a bit half baked I'm afraid - the use of Roboto font reads as super generic, almost as if they're using Calibri or something. The animations are fairly nice, but the titles are oddly rendered and seem a bit tacky early 2000s to me.

It was time for an update for sure, but I was expecting something as daring as the early 2010s package with the "top bar", which they've gradually been evolving away from since 2010:

I never quite understood the "top bar" - as with a lot of graphics from that era, it was pretty unnecessary for what, ultimately, just showed the logo/programme name and some financial info.

Yes, everything seems to have been an evolution from the package that immediately superseded the first generation HD look.

Supposedly the font is custom called Wordmark internal

The breaking news strap is one of the most discreet I've seen, due to its smaller size and darker shade of red.

It feels slightly odd not to have a 'live' bug permanently on-screen - especially during live footage and interviews. But I like that they're trying something a bit different.

(The bit under the logo that says 'reports' does alternate with 'live' and the time on the broadcast version, but there's no permanent 'live' bug)
