Interesting tidbits from the WSJ about NBC News/Peacock and NBC NEWS NOW.

Quote:MSNBC said Thursday it is putting much of its TV lineup on its parent company’s Peacock service, an effort to increase its offerings as competition in streaming news heats up.

Beginning this spring, shows including “Morning Joe,” “All In With Chris Hayes, ” “The ReidOut,” “Deadline: White House” and “The Beat with Ari Melber ” will appear on Peacock hours after they air on TV, MSNBC said. The shows will be available to Peacock Premium subscribers, who pay at least $4.99 a month for the service.

MSNBC President Rashida Jones said in an interview that the streaming push will introduce the TV shows to viewers who watch the network’s programming on Peacock, which until now had been called “The Choice.” The network is doing away with that brand soon, putting all of its streaming programming under the banner MSNBC on Peacock, she said.

“The idea is, you can watch it live on cable or you can watch it at your leisure on streaming,” Ms. Jones said.

The decision to put some of MSNBC’s programming on Peacock with a delay allows the network to capture streaming subscribers without competing directly with the cable bundle, a profit center for TV news. Some of the network’s programs, including “The Rachel Maddow Show,” “The Last Word” and “The 11th Hour” aren’t slated to appear on Peacock, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Ms. Jones said that the latest push isn’t an attempt to create an exact replica of the programming viewers get on cable.
MSNBC President Rashida Jones said the effort isn’t an attempt to create an exact replica of the programming viewers get on cable.

The move is part of an effort by NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde to transition the company’s news networks toward streaming as viewers cut the cable cord.
The group’s offerings include NBC News Now, an advertising-supported streaming service that is widely distributed on services including Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube and Roku Inc.’s the Roku Channel.

Competitors of NBCUniversal, a unit of Comcast Corp. CMCSA -2.34% , also are making significant investments in streaming. CNN has said it plans to hire hundreds of employees to launch CNN+, a coming streaming service that is slated to include shows from prominent journalists including Chris Wallace, Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper. Fox News in 2018 launched Fox Nation, a service with original programming from popular hosts including Tucker Carlson. Fox News said last year it would stream some of its most popular shows on Fox Nation after they aired on TV.

Fox News parent Fox Corp. and The Wall Street Journal parent News Corp share common ownership.
NBC News President Noah Oppenheim said that NBC News and MSNBC have distinct identities on their respective streaming services.

Noah Oppenheim, president of NBC News, said in an interview that NBC News and MSNBC have distinct identities on their respective streaming services: NBC News Now, which launched in 2019, stands for nonpartisan journalism and MSNBC on Peacock emphasizes opinion programming, he said. Mr. Oppenheim said NBCUniversal News Group’s streaming efforts are profitable but declined to provide specific figures.

“A lot of our success in the space—both financially and editorially—is driven by the fact that we have a news gathering and reporting engine that is NBC News,” Mr. Oppenheim said.

MSNBC’s streaming push will allow some of the network’s anchors to produce different versions of their shows for traditional TV and streaming. Symone Sanders, who later this year will begin hosting a weekend show on MSNBC’s TV network and one of several streaming shows for Peacock on MSNBC, said in an interview that she is already contemplating in-depth segments for the streaming show that she might not have time for on the cable channel.

“Maybe there’s something I really wanted to do on the linear show that I didn’t get to do because breaking news had to dominate most of my linear program,” Ms. Sanders said. “That means that I can do the segment I didn’t get to do on streaming.”

Hallie Jackson, senior Washington correspondent for NBC News, said briefings from the Pentagon on the Russia-Ukraine war have lately pre-empted other coverage plans for her MSNBC show, “Hallie Jackson Reports.” But on her streaming show, “Hallie Jackson Now,” Ms. Jackson has more time to make sense of the day’s developments by checking in with reporters in the field, she said.

That piece must be the first time that it has been publicly acknowledged that MSNBC is an "opinion programming" network rather than a news network?

It looks like a reaction to the impending CNN+ launch, which my hunch, and having spoken to associates there, will be a damp squib.

It also fits in for Peacock's content strategy, whilst they don't want to kill off the free model, they do want to have some content for the pay version , and this is cheaper and can attract people who like MSNBC stuff can come on over to Peacock the next day if they don't have the channel anymore, and might be willing to plop down $4.99 /month for it.

Their plan has been in motion for more than a year ever since the morning news block with Joe Fryer and Savannah Sellers launched. I think they might be willing to admit that they were late to the streaming game compared to CBS and ABC, but they have so many more resources than both of them that they're already quickly developing a pretty competitive channel in the form of News Now.

It is pretty dramatic though to see how quickly the broadcast networks are now embracing streaming and relegating the legacy OTA and cable products to second class.

Well its not a surprise all these broadcasters and content creators are leaning into streaming and creating CNN+ and Peacock for NBCNewsNOw. So many people are dumping paytv because of being ripped off by these big cable tv providers. Cord cutting is accelerating and more and more tv watchers are now streaming Netflix and Prime, etc. So if you dont have a viable streaming product outside of paytv you will likely be left in the dust.

I dont understand the UK bundling streaming services into paytv services. But i guess they are doing that to try to retain customers. Or at least I dont understand why anyone would want it especially if you find yourself watching a streaming service like Netflix, Prime, Appletv, Disney...etc. But maybe because the US streaming services are well established and there are far more of them already. Like Paramount+ and HBOMax (which gave away rights to Sky, wonder how long that arrangement will last, with all the ownership chaanges. youd think theyd want to sell HBOMax in the UK instead of money going to Comcast/NBCUniversal's Sky service. But who knows whats going to happen in the wild world of streaming.)

The Sky/HBO runs for 5years but now that these companies are squarely in the hands of American media conglomerates, who knows what the future holds anymore. They frequently get into little snits with each other and they often pull their channels off of paytv systems when there is a disagreement over money and such. Recently NBC/Universal and then DisneyABC pulled all their channels suits off of YouTubeTV a various points in past few months over money and the consumer was caught in the middle when their channels were pulled. So nothing is guaranteed when greed is involved.

No. Back in 2009, this happened...
Quote:"We're changing dayside away from the TelePrompTer headline news to Dylan Ratigan and Dr. Nancy. And we'll continue to do that less--of people sitting behind a desk, reading TelePrompTers," Griffin says. "Our audience knows what's going on. They've got BlackBerrys. They're on the Web. So we've got to give them more."

NBC News Now is simulcasting Sky News throughout the morning, but looks like they repeat the TOTH bulletin at 1630 GMT because Sky News is showing the "FYI" kids news program.

They try to time their commercial adverts as well, using the ones with the 2m30s countdown, but they mistime some of it because they try to cover the Qatar Airways sponsorship.

WOW! Shepherd Smith presenting nightly news this Friday. Thats kinda big news. Ever since he's joined the NBC family of networks he's been quietly ensconced over at CNBC.

That is good news for him, hope, they give him more outings on NBC. He's a skilled professional, excellent with breaking news. I will add, CNBC was a way better choice for him than MSNBC, "The News" is a great uh newscast and CNBC let's it be flexible, a couple weeks ago the show expanded an extra hour to cover the nuclear plant situation. MSNBC doesn't seem interested in having just a straightforward newscast, and CNBC seems less worried about the ratings than MSNBC would be.
