Yep.. they paid 7.75 billion. Apparently they pay more than any other broadcaster. 85% of the IOC budget comes from broadcast rights. So NBC needs to make their money back and using all of broadcast assets is the way to do that. It commercial tv they dont get funding from any other source than advertising.

It’s an interesting one too though because while MSNBC’s schedule was repeatedly reworked to bring a clear distinction between daytime news and primetime/MJ opinion, Brian Williams’ 11pm slot felt like somewhere in between. News and fact focussed, but not out of keeping with their primetime output.
It’ll be interesting to see if Stephanie’s show is simply meant to continue what BW started, or if they’re considering her as a potential Maddow replacement when she steps down next year.

I noticed that MSNBC seems to be live during North American overnight hours, covering the latest updates on Ukraine. Are they, in a way, trying to compete with CNN/CNNI's overnight coverage?

Actually, ever since the invasion began, all cable news channels have been live all day & night.
Probably just what the news requires rather than any sense of competitiveness (because ain't no one measuring ratings between midnight and 6am ET).
But another thing unique about MSNBC's coverage is that they have a brand to go along with ("Ukraine Invasion"), whereas the two other channels just rely on the standard "breaking news" term.

What time did the Sky News simulcast start?
I noticed NBC News Now had gone back to showing Dateline in the early hours after initially simulcasting MSNBC at the start of the invasion, so taking Sky instead is definitely an improvement if it what they were doing.
I guess that, as MSNBC is a subscription channel, there will be issues if they start regularly streaming it for free on NBC News Now - whereas Sky News is already freely available on YouTube around the world.

SkyNews is already a free channel that airs on the Peacock streaming service right next to NBC News Now regularly in their channels section. Its also a free channel on Pluto tv and free on the SkyNews streaming and cant remember if Xumo carries it as a channel as well. So i dont think carrying it will cause issues for NBC/Peacock as it already streams it free right next to NBC News Now in the Peacock news channels section.

Sorry - that's that I was trying to say. No issues taking Sky News, but potential issues with subscription TV providers if they routinely make MSNBC output available to all.
I'm guessing that's also why MSNBC isn't available on Peacock.

I really thought this would have been the best opportunity to see closer news sharing with SkyNews and MSNBC/NBC News. Combining reporters on the ground from both organizations. Similar to what CNN Domestic and CNN International does. The reporter delivers a report for one channel and then immediately pops over to do a live hit for the other channel. Sky and NBC reporters appearing on both channels, essentially increasing both channels reporting power. But that will take closer ties and coordination. So that their Ukraine reporting blocks align when they are needed for both channels and the availability of the correspondents. IT will be interesting to see how both news orgs create closer ties going forward.

Sky News is streaming again on NBC News Now. I'm assuming that NBC News Now is simulcasting Sky News during overnight hours for the foreseeable future.
MSNBC seems to be back to regular schedule with Rachel Maddow Show is airing right now (0500 GMT), not sure if there's going to be an overnight coverage.

Non-stop live began at 5:00am ET or 11:00am GMT.
I think the previous hours of replays was unintentional (although it's quite a stretch if they went on for that long, or maybe there's really no one able to helm the live during that time?). I should also note that neither of MSNBC's competitors lost the live during that period.
Update: Sky News coverage will be simulcast on MSNBC 2:00-5:00am ET or 8:00-11:00am GMT.
