My sincere condolences to his family and friends

To those of us who grew up with the original run of University Challenge, it still sounds weird, almost wrong when the announcement at the beginning of the show says “Asking the questions, Jeremy Paxman”. We still expect to hear the name Bamber Gascoigne. R.I.P.

Most (if not all) sources incorrectly named Gascoigne the original host of BBC's show, however the original University Challenge (1962-1987) was not aired at the BBC at the time, but instead ITV or its franchises despite the original incarnation also produced by Granada Television. For example ITV News.

Gascoigne, best known as the original host of BBC’s University Challenge, died at his home in Richmond, the Grange Park Opera has announced on behalf of his family.

So did the presenter I saw introducing the obituary on BBC News, who you'd think out of anyone would get it right. The obituary itself though did point out he presented it on ITV.

One of the most spoofed and imitated presenters. Never arrogant or supercilious. RIP

Bamber was a gent- really warm aura about him, very different to Paxman- sending his family lots of love.

He was the original ‘weird crush’- I remember him saying on Come On Down: The Game Show Story that a load of teenage girls viewed him as a sex symbol

University Challenge was spoofed a few times as well (and Gascoigne in the process), best known examples were The Young Ones and Not The Nine O'Clock News. There are probably others.

Just had a look at the obituary in The Guardian. He had a remarkable lineage.

And the best UC question ever, full stop, I think. I do wonder how Arthur got to 'Elephant' as he seemed quite surprised it was right.

When you think about it Arthur could have said anything beginning with 'E' because there was no correct answer as such and it was just a bit of fun. By the way, does anyone know anyone else who's Christian name is Bamber? I don't.

Bamber was his middle name. He was born Arthur Bamber Gascoigne.

There were 2 18th century politicians (Actually Bamber Gascoigne's ancestors by the looks of it) called Bamber Gascoyne, but that's all Wikipedia and Google throw up - plenty of people with the surname Bamber, though.
