The View - Whoopi Goldberg Suspended
#1
Stateside news this evening: Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended by makers of The View.

This comes after remarks Goldberg made related to the holocaust.

Seen as the main star of the programme for almost 16 years, this is a significant step taken by ABC.

Joy Behar will fill-in for Whoopi for the next two weeks.

I’m surprised as this seems to have come after Whoopi released a statement apologising.

While the tweeted apology seems contrite, as a good rule of thumb, it's never really a good idea to make controversial comments about something as unimaginably horrific as the holocaust of all things... :?
"Good evening. Dull, grey, cold, miserable - and that's just me. The weather hasn't been great, either."

After apologising, she kind of doubled down on her thoughts (or certainly repeated them) when speaking to Stephen Colbert later in the day. That interview it does appear was filmed before the appology was released but broadcast afterwards to muddy the water a little.

The nightly talk shows in the US are usually recorded at around 5pm, although Stephen Colbert has hosted the Late Show live on a number of occasions, often when there have been highly signifigant political events.

Really would have expected someone like her to have known better than to come out with something like that in the first place.

Isn't it Goldberg who appears on the DVDs of the likes of Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry about the racist content of the cartoons?

Oh yes - so it was:

What was she trying to even say? Surely you could word things better without equating it to the Holocaust. Racism and the treatment of African Americans is very different to the Ethnic Cleansing of Jewish Europeans in WW2, and the ethnic cleansing of any other indigenous or subjugated poulace: The Tutsi, Twa, Bosnian Muslims, et al.

Yes it's an amazing misjudgement. I watched the Colbert interview earlier and she seemed to understand what the problem is and made some linteresting but rather contrived points in explaining what she was getting at.

There was an interesting comment on the video* making a good point that she understands racism from a very American perspective. Her experience and understanding is wrapped up in experiencing racism in the US and its history. Its very different to how racism manifests itself elsewhere.

It's certainly something I've noticed from some Americans online, but from someone as intelligent and worldly wise as Whoopi it Is surprising

Not just about racism though, but in general in my experience, many don't seem to realise there's a world outside their country and things can be very different in other places. Even the cultural differences between the US and UK seem to stump many Americans I've talked to, let alone countries further afield or historically.

But Whoopi is indeed someone I would expect to be more aware about such things than your average American. You'd think someone who's travelled to numerous places and met numerous different people during her career would be much more clued up than someone who's never left the US.

I like Whoopi overall but I've never been that comfortable with her on The View and you have to wonder if the producers are able to keep her in line.

Certainly the history we've had in Europe very much shows that racism exists between groups with the same skin colour despite what Whoopi seems to be claiming, I doubt you'd have many people over here trying to claim otherwise. Especially over the last few years we've had. Much of the same in Africa and Asia too. Definitely agree that Whoopi seems to be seeing things from a US perspective, though I don't think her intentions were malicious, just ignorant.

Admittedly I've always been suprised that a major hollywood star like her has done 15 years on what is basically the American version of Loose Women. Then again, she's done voices for CITV cartoons in the past and even the producers of Star Trek were suprised someone as big as her wanted to be on the show, so she has had an unusual career and done a lot of things most major movie stars would consider "beneath them".

A fully deserved suspension and she should use the time off to reflect on her comments.

She should count herself lucky, Sharon Osbourne was fired from The Talk for less.

Do wonder though if it is just kicking the ball down the park and whether confronting the issue head on in the next episode would be the more mature response, but that just doesn't seem an option in society today.

As such I wouldn't rule out this developing into a Sharon Osbourne situation. We've seen time and time again how these things can snowball, especially if there are any skeletons in the closet just waiting for such an opportunity to come out.
