Apple TV+ launch on Sky

While we wait for Peacock and Paramount+, Sky announcing another tie up with a streaming service, this time Apple TV+. Because quality is better than quantity, right? Possibly.

Possibly bigger news for some though is that the Sky Go app will be available on Apple TV. Only in the U.K. only though (why not Ireland, I of course have to ask?) Reason for this being big is that Sky are probably the last company in the known universe who do not allow casting (yes I know Now does have it). Heretofore the only way to get Sky Go on a TV was via a PC and a physical HDMI connection. I know the reason for their intransigence on this (might discourage people paying for multiroom) but this appears to be an albeit slight thaw in this policy.

I assumed the reason was to stop people sharing their Sky log ins with other people (I would certainly be using my mum's if that was possible!), much like many share their Netflix and others with family members. This will surely make that very easy.

As an aside maybe it's just me but I actually can't fully hook up via an HDMI. It will play the picture but the sound will only come through the laptop and there's no way of me changing it. Interestingly the sound comes through the TV for the ads but not the actual shows!

I took that as a given, Apple TV+ twelve month free trials are given with every iOS or Apple TV product and up until recently they were being extended regularly. (they’ve stopped that now though).

Now only three month free trials with new products. I actually thought they'd give these out with every new Apple product you buy as an extra sales point but once you've used the trial once you can't get it again, no matter how many products you buy, much to my disappointment when my housemate bought a new phone recently.

At least one broadband provider (I noticed as I'm shopping around) will give you 12 months Apple TV "on us", and presumably you can use this on the Sky integration.

I think they just need to get Prime on there now (if it isn't already - Now is on Firestick and Prime has been on the Now boxes for a while) and the entire experience will be complete.

Pretty sure Prime Video has been on Sky Q since December 2020.

It’s been on Sky Q a while, yes.

Eir will give you three (used to be 12) months Apple TV+ too, if you take their TV service and haven’t had a previous entitlement to a trial. It’s a bit of a roundabout way, as you get an Apple TV as the set top box.

One very little known thing about Sky Q boxes is that they are Airplay recievers, for audio only. Would be nice if this deal would make them video recievers too, but I doubt that will happen. The existing feature is rarely if ever advertised.

This is an interesting development. I can see Apple TV being offered Sky Go in UHD if this is such a comprehensive offering. We'll see the devil in the detail when it's launched.

I don’t know if we’ve a better place to say this but Apple TV+ has gotten a launch on older LG webOS TVs (back as far as 2016), it’s been around a while on newer models.

FYI there's a Barclaycard offer for 5 months of Apple TV+ free for anyone with an account with them. Seems like you can use it even if you've previously used free Apple TV+ offers which doesn't tend to be the norm.

I've still got a month left on my 3 free months via having an LG TV. On top of this I've previously had access to that long year-plus launch free offer and an additional 3 months through my housemate's new phone. I'm still yet to pay for the service but have watched the entirety of the now finished series Dickinson and a whole load else, and now 5 months more worth of content! Are people still not subscribing? It feels like the service is continue to struggle to find another defining series beyond Ted Lasso. I thought Foundation might be that but it didn't really make any impact at all and I found it quite dull.

I’ve had the free year after buying a new phone, and then I pay to subscribe for a year so I could watch the second series of This Morning Show & continue with Ted Lasso. But I’ve added family via Family Sharing, so makes it okay value when you know others are using it.

I do wonder if it struggles from not enough people trying it? The shows are good quality and they’d surely have a better following if they were on Netflix, for example?

The problem isn’t quality but quantity - there just isn’t very much on it with (Fraggle Rock and a few movies aside) very little in the way of bought in content.

I like the Morning Show - it’s one that’s likely of interest to many on this site given its setting, though it kinda loses its way plot wise in the second season. Mythic Quest, the work com set in a Californian video games studio, is very good too.

I’ll add Schmigadoon to the recommendations, a parody of musical productions with brilliant songs and a great cast.

I know what you mean about content, when compared to how much Netflix seem to release, but we have to take it back to it being a relatively new player in the streaming market. Netflix for years was bolstered up by films and shows that they acquired the rights to whilst they slowly increased original productions, similarly Disney+ has the back up of the Disney & 20th Century back catalogue to fill their service. The productions from Apple TV+ (I’m still a little unsure on the name) that I’ve seen have all been fantastic. It could do with being on a few more platforms.

When Apple TV+ launched on X1 really took advantage of something I had access for years, using the Smart TV app was buggy and I have an out of date AppleTV. I was watching the show For All Mankind an alternate version of the space race where Russia beat the US. There’s a character named Molly Cobb played by Sonya Walger who is a British-Argentine actress with US citizenship. However when I was watching she reminded me of of Deborah Turness anyone see the resemblance?
