Tokyo Paralympics on Channel 4 - via Leeds
#1
Details of C4's coverage for the games have been announced, with coverage being anchored in Leeds and London and reporters on the ground in Tokyo, including Ade Adepitan with the nightly highlights and Rosie Jones reporting for The Last Leg, which will be based in London. Lee McKenzie and Vick Hope will also be in Tokyo.

Claire Balding will anchor live from Leeds, whilst Steph McGovern co-hosts the breakfast slot with Arthur Williams. JJ Williams and Sophie Morgan also return from Rio, with C4's rugby reporter Ed Jackson completing the presenting line up.

Over 300 hours will be on C4 and More4, which will focus on team events. 1000 further hours will be available via 16 streams on a "Paralympic microsite", which sounds like it'll be via the C4 website rather than All4, which would be a shame as All4 would make it most widely accessible. 4Seven will carry an audio described and signed version of the Opening Ceremony.

No press pack from C4 yet but a report from MediaGuardian:

P.S. Worth noting that although C4 have done a deal for Paris 2024 there is currently no deal in place for next years Winter Paralympics.

Quote:The Highlights show will then come to UK audiences from Tokyo, before returning to Leeds for an early evening show celebrating ParalympicsGB medals of the day

Also announces some related programming in the build up with Jonnie Peacock, Billy Monger, Sophie Morgan all presenting doccumentaries, a Come Dine With Me special and a series of interviews hosted by Michael Johnson.

Looking forward to it!

C4 are probably quite disapointed that Come Dine with Me isn't an Olympic event yet.

Picking this up from the Olympic thread.

Studio programming, produced by Whisper from Leeds, will have a live studio audience. There's a glimpse at the graphics too.

Sourced from here, which has more info on their set-up.

Lots of details in that article on their coverage plans, confirming more live presentation from Tokyo than the BBC have had, mainly at the swimming, cycling and athletics. C4 coverage begins overnight from Tokyo, with Paralympics Breakfast scheduled from 7.30-9pm (with Steph McGovern and Arthur Williams in Leeds) then live coverage with Clare Balding continuing through to 2.30pm - and it sounds like they're aiming to have an audience with some of the competitors families. Production will be based in Ealing.

They'll have two highlights shows - one hour pre-recorded from Tokyo with Ade Adepitan at 5pm and a 30 minute "Gold Rush" show with Clare at 7.30pm, whilst The Last Leg is at 10pm followed by a repeat of highlights (not sure which one) at 11pm. More4 will also have coverage from 7.30am each day, focusing mainly but not exclusively on team sports. The 16 online streams will be a direct relay of the streams from OBS with host commentary, with around a third of the coverage subtitled.

Quite surprised they're dropping LEXI as thought that worked quite well.

It sounds like, at least on free to air channels, Paralympics will have a better coverage this year than the Olympics.

I like the fact that people like Clare Balding are involved with both Paralympics and Olympics.

Live coverage is split into 2 hour slots overnight and 90 minute slots in the morning, with More4 split into two and a half hour slots. They've even split the opening ceremony to air 11.30-1.30/1.30-3.15. Hour long highlights at 5pm and 11pm and 30 minutes at 7.30pm.

Billy Monger said in a TV Choice interview he isn't part of Paralympics because of "other commitments" (don't know if thats F1/W Series) thats why he wanted to make the documentary

They have the same status as the Olympics meaning they must be free-to-air

The Radio Times coverage of the games is somewhat underwhelming considering the effort they go to for the Olympics now. I didn't expect them to match that but they've just four pages of features but most disappointingly is the listings pages, which were adapted for the Olympics to give BBC1 twice as much space but haven't been for the Paralympics, meaning the bulk of information on the C4 live coverage is restricted to the bottom of the daytime listings column and therefore not much detail at all.

Worth pointing out it does also have the cover.

Absolutely, though that did raise my expectations. Also worth saying it only falls short of the high standards it set itself a couple of weeks ago and the other TV mags aren't exactly doing a better job. It's just odd to add the Paralympic Flag to the C4 listings column and then begin with Countdown. Actually took me far longer than it should to realise where the listings were.

Way off topic but the listings during the Olympics ditching the daytime column made much more sense and would enable them to bring C5 back into the main pages too - I think the notion of the RT offering expanded daytime listings is long gone now. At the very least though an extra column for C4 for the duration of the Paralympics would have been a handy addition.

Anyway, back vaguely on topic and a reminder that C4's coverage of wheelchair sport didn't begin with London 2012.

It's a shame their commitment between games has waivered slightly with most coverage now online with a follow up programme either early on Sunday mornings or overnight for key events - although of course over the last 18 months or so ParaSport has probably suffered more than most when it comes to events being cancelled. Will be interesting to see how these perform for them as they're the first summer games they've had with no primetime action.

JJ Charmers is also involved this time not presenting the overnight coverage, the exact opposite the afternoons on More 4
