Google image search strikes again

Back on the old place we'd have an occasional discussion about when mocks and the like from TV Forum ended up being broadcast or in other peculiar places. Examples of this include:

• The mock/parody BBC Parliament logo that VMPhil did and which ended up in the Google search results info pane when you searched 'BBC Parliament'

• The Challenge TV/Carlton mash-up logo Invent Meridian made and which Sky ended up using on their online TV guide

...and I'm sure there are plenty of others, but I can't remember any more off the top of my head!

Anyway, BBC One seem to be the latest broadcaster to have fallen foul of a quick Google image search. The below is a video they've uploaded and has been appearing on socials related to Line of Duty (the relevant bit is about 10 seconds in):

Anything seem familiar? Well, if you looked at The Gallery on TVF it would have done, because the Top of the Pops graphic seems to have been lifted straight from a mock that DeMarkay did earlier this year! Original thread is linked here, and the image they seem to have taken is the neat little header image DeMarkay added at the start of his post. They've even animated it and formatted the text in the same style as DeMarkay did in their mock!

Ultimately, yes you're right – but time is also a factor. It's worth remembering that this is a throwaway piece of social media content, not based on Top of the Pops but a different show. I think this is one of those times where it doesn't really matter that it was wrong. Of course, taking someone else's work, even if it's a mock design, is not really okay, but I guess that's the risk of basing your design on someone else's TV show and uploading it to the internet.

Think this is a very fair point on the creation of 'mock' designs generally.

As alluded to by [mention]brioalex[/mention] and [mention]dbl[/mention], I'd try to see it more as a compliment on the quality of your work, [mention]DeMarkay[/mention], than anything else.

The BBC have apologised and as you’ll see, the video has been taken down.

I didn’t ask for it to be taken down, but they thought it was the best thing to do.

Hmm. A simple message in the description or the comments would have sufficed. Not sure that this was the best decision, especially considering [mention]DeMarkay[/mention] even said he didn't want it taken down.

I don't think it's that bad. The BBC created Top of the pops so I assume it belongs to them. If someone chooses to make a mock and the BBC use it, sure they should acknowledge the creator of the mock but it's been created based off BBC content in the first place. This video was likely made by some poor guy who likely has never watched a single episode of TOTP's and just assumed it was real. Not the end of the world.

If there were copyright breeches I would understand the outrage. I am not sure how it works with a mock of copyrighted content. I'd see it as a compliment. The mock looks so good they thought it was real!

Also, while I've got you, may I please kindly remind you that when you post on this site, you're publishing a public comment on an online forum rather than messaging a friend on Snapchat? I assume you're one of our younger users, but nevertheless, capital letters, full stops, and using proper grammar (and fewer 'words' like 'musta') would be appreciated.

If in doubt, take direction from the way that other users express themselves; if your comment sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everyone else's, it's perhaps a sign that you need to address something.
