Pre 1989 there were a number of film channels exclusive to cable, a couple of which were owned by the Mirror group before L!ve TV - Mirrorvision and Premier - plus a few others, which had very mixed availability, and were often played out locally (and in those days without worrying about watersheds).
These all lost their rights to any worthwhile films when Sky and BSB competed for, and did deals with, all of the main film companies for their channels, and the cable channels couldn't compete with the price films now cost.
