Not odd, but rather genius. It was a placeholder for the "MAIN THING." I see it that it was not shown initially so that when the rebrand goes full steam, the main logo would be seen as okay, and the icons would be introduced as a new visual link for the BBC's services. Very nice idea from the BBC.

The BBC Sounds app on Android has the new BBC Radio logos included in it for the 1st time. One criticism that I see in it is from BBC News NI. They are doing a news update on that station right now. However they are still using the BBC News NI box with the old Gill Sans/Reith logo.

i firmly believe that it's a universal rule in brand guides to not mock up your own versions of a logo.

What I still find incredible about that is not just that it looks bad, but that it’s a bad copy of North West Tonight’s titles, and doing so no doubt took a lot more time and effort than had they simply asked NWT nicely for their After Effects files so they could customise them properly.

Yes. They are no longer named as such. Even BBC Sounds website (and maybe app) updated the page about Radio 5 Sports Extra, no longer includes "Live". BBC annual plan also confirmed it.
Nice little animation at the end of the Glastonbury trail, with the iPlayer icon changing into the Sounds one.
