BBC (Miscellaneous): 2021 Rebrand
Spencer post_id=75351 time= user_id=891 Wrote:I’m still struggling to work out the logic of the new branding rollout, and finding it very bizarre.

The iPlayer icon has been slowly introduced, with the interim text-based logo finding its way onto the app icons first, followed later by the pink blocks after they’d been slowly introduced in promotions.

But then News goes straight in for the red blocks before they’ve appeared anywhere else… although there’s the text-based logo on the splash screen.

For a supposedly carefully planned, phased rollout, they’re doing a good job of making it all seem very random and haphazard.

Well I’ve created a folder in the hope that they all change to icons soon…!

Given the current budget constraints, I would say they want to roll it out slowly to see how it goes and make the necessary changes as they go rather than having a huge patch-up job that would go with a single rollout across all platforms (radio, tv, news, online).

I’m not questioning the gradual nature of the rollout, rather the haphazard, apparently random way the rollout is being done.

And if cost is the driving force, rebranding services twice, which is essentially what they’re doing with the text-based logos followed by the block icons, makes no sense, as they’re making extra work for themselves.

I’m guessing it represents the places where you can “follow” BBC News - a tv screen, a computer screen and a phone screen? But if that’s the case, it would have made sense to introduced the ads like we’ve had for i-player: “follow on…” along with it.

And if that’s not what the logo means, then what is it?

I think it’s a map of the world.

Don’t tell the Aussies.

I think you're right Moz, I initially saw it as images in articles but if you really squint you can just about get a world out of it (sorry Australia). Would be nice when we finally get new News titles for this to be indicated, I'm picturing continents getting sucked into the 3 blocks which form at the end of the titles.

The fact that Sounds hasn't been updated yet and they've been using their new logo in almost every promo now. Even the website now has the new logo and yet they haven't updated the logo on iOS/Android.

And it feels like the BBC has completely sidelined the international BBC News app, as it still has the Gill Sans logos, the app fonts are still Helvetica, and the layout is still, meh.

Already created one for my BBC Apps. On the Android based Fire OS (Android-yfied). Now I keep checking both Google Play and Amazon Appstore to check if they have updated it yet.

And the current state of play in Google Play Store.

They’re still using Gill on the News and Weather apps?! :o
Sounds app on iOS has gotten an update. New logo, and tweaked UI.
Station logos are still the same as before, however.

I’d imagine these updates are placeholders for what comes next

At least we already know about new station logos in TV promos, merchandise, billboards, etc. (except BBC Radio 4 Extra logo in full form which still in mystery despite already revealed the short-form of the logo)

Also that iOS users are tested before rolling it out to other platforms.

I imagine it will just be a standard Radio 4 logo with EXTRA in text next to it. So short form 4X and full form 4 EXTRA.

I think we just need to wait on Weather being updated now.
