Yeah CAS decisions could have a big impact on the sporting Calander this year through I suspect ideas that the World cup or Wimbledon could be cancelled as a result of them are more pretty unlikely. CAS themselves know that if they push it too much the international sport community could always replace their role.

Personally I think that Russian teams should be banned from competing in sports (such as the World Cup football) while the country is at war, but solo athletes - including those due to be at the Paralympics - should be allowed to compete (though not under their national banner). There's no reason to ban Medvedev from Wimbledon, as he's not representing his country there, he's playing for his own personal glory and prize money. Punish the country, not the individual.

It's an all too frequent mistake. Even seen it at the Commonwealth Games (probably 2010) where the graphics had the Union Jack as the England flag initially before quickly being corrected.

Could see a situation similar to the Olympics where it's the Russian FA rather than Russia competing. In Euro 92 the dissolved Soviet Union was instead represented by the "Commonwealth of Independent States".

As predicted an Olympic style solution with them competing as the Football Union of Russia. Remains to be seen how their immediate competition responds.

As Dan Roan says it’s unlikely to change anything. FIFA do mention expelling Russia is a possibility.

The IOC have upped the anger and now recommend where possible for no Russian or Belorussian athletes and officials to be invited to international sporting events due to the breaking of the Olympic Truce.

This could have a big impact on the tennis season in particular. The new Men’s world number 1 is Russian.


Ditto it will have a major effect on the Paralympics either way (According to the BBC the IPC believe they legally can’t ban athletes from Russia and Belarus so things could get tricky.)

The IOC might have given FIFA away out by saying it doesn’t apply if it’s legally impossible to expel a country. And that is what FIFA and UEFA fear is the case - even through that would likely collapse their organisations and cause major tournaments to be cancelled.

It's "FU Russia" Rhys, just to avoid confusion with the Rugby Football Union I'm sure.

Of course the IOC speak up after their own event having bent over backwards to circumvent their own Rusdian ban in recent years. What is noteable though is if any ban extends to individual athletes that would presumably affect club football too with Russian players in the Premier League etc.
