Interesting how old fashioned the Queens Message (message not speech despite what Alf Roberts says!) looks, and looks like it's on film too.

A similar idea to EastEnders featuring midnight on New Years Eve. You do have to wonder what those in Coronation Street had on ITV either side of The Queen, presumably the Christmas Day special of whatever they watched at 7:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays

It actually was on VT, the last year it was on film was 1988, although as I mentioned in another thread recently, they would have presumably recorded it on film for quite a while after most other programmes had moved to VT, because various countries in the Commonwealth would presumably have only been able to show it on film, we know Channel were still only using film in 1979.

As you say, Alf gets it wrong, and it's perhaps surprising how informal it all is, cutting straight from Corrie to the message and back again. You'd think there would have been endless discussion about preserving the dignity of the message and the Queen herself, but it's literally just bunged in like an ad break. Wonder how many viewers hadn't heard about it in advance and didn't realise it was three o'clock and just assumed it was a bit in Corrie, expecting it to be Jeanette Charles or something.

i think in the Xmas HIGNFY that year a panellist (can’t remember who) joked that Corrie cut back to Alf Roberts “scratching his balls” during the Queen’s Message. Luckily we were spared that, but you could imagine someone doing a PhD in TV history tenuously suggesting the whole thing was a sort of forerunner to Jim Royle’s role in that future classic from Granada….and ultimately Gogglebox.

I know this off by heart because they played it almost in full (minus the big finish) for one of their "highlights of the night" sequences just before 6am. I remember when BBC Parliament replayed it for the first time I made a point of plugging my mini disc recorder directly into the On Digital box so I could get a recording without LP VHS hiss (probably still mono, but I had to guess when it was coming on as BBC Parliament was still sound only and a few weeks away from going 1/4 screen with Freeview's launch at that point)...all seems a million years ago now as you say you can find pretty much anything online somewhere.

If it has LP hiss, then it will definitely be mono, as a hi-fi stereo track won't have that, even in LP!

I meant the On Digital sound only feed of BBC Parliament was probably still mono. Just noticed I said “with” instead of “without” which didn’t make it clear, now corrected.

I assume this was a backup copy on VT? (it must be a VT label rather than film with it stating that it's PAL?)

Or they transferred it to VT for broadcast, but still sent film prints out to other countries.

Hm, okay, so it wasn't on an outside window then? For some reason I always thought that was. Though it explains why those plants/trees never seemed to move.

Very 80s looking set I must admit which always looked a bit drab. It looks even more drab by 9:15 than it did at 6am, presumably to match the drab content Thankfully they threw some more colour at it in the later years.

Incidentally, how long did Robert Kee and Michael Parkinson last at TV-am? We know David Frost stayed there until the end, and Anna Ford and Angela Rippon were sacked in April.

I'm guessing Robert Kee left when Daybreak was reduced to a half hour and moved from the newsroom.

And we know Michael Parkinson wanted to quit too but was persuaded to stay, in fear of the company going under completely. But I'm not sure how long he stayed there till.
