Local adverts on Sky
#1
I have had Sky Q now for nearly a year and have noticed in the last couple of weeks local adverts appearing on some of the channels. Have Cabot Circus shopping centre suddenly started advertising nationally on MTV and the Bristol Pantomime on Sky cinema or are they somehow being inserted locally. I always thorough the sky feed was national ?

They are able to localise/personalist using a technology called adsmart.

It's not just done based on locality, but by audience types also - for example pet owners, age, car ownership, etc can all be targetted.

Basically, the feed is national but your box drops the feed and shows locally stored ads to you instead.

And it’s also done on Virgin …..

There’s this recent article from Deloitte TMT

Believe it only works "live", unless its changed. It used to be that if you saw a "personalised" advert and wound back the feed through the Sky box, you wouldn't see the "personalised" advert you'd see what actually was transmitted and not the advert the box showed you.

In a similar vein I'm watching old series of Curb Your Enthusiasm on Sky's boxed sets. As I fast forward through the ad breaks, I notice the ads and trailers are 'present day'. So how does that work? I select the show, it starts downloading, after 1 or 2% has been downloaded I start playing, and the first thing I see before the show starts are 2 or 3 mins of up to date ads and trailers (which I spool through of course ?‍♂️)

See, the hard drive in the Sky boxes do more than store your recordings Smile Believe the new trailers get "pushed" (like the software updates) overnight from the satellite rather than down the broadband connection so there's always a pool of resources.

The Sky+ boxes do work without a hard drive in them (not that that's a recommended thing to do), so presumably you'd just get something generic trailer wise and whatever was transmitted over the air if there's nothing for the box to replace
