BBC3 isn't going to have the same amount of new content as other channels though and this will prove to be the case whenever it launches, leading to it being known for its reliance on repeats.

"50% old 50% new" was the soundbite for BBC Scotland when it was being proposed. Funnily enough, no mention of the amount of repeats.

It does sound like a lot of contradictions. BBC Three's budget was cut but it made loads of good programmes so its budget is increasing; "Linear is in decline and VODs are growing" so the BBC makes a new linear channel, one they allready shut because "Linear is in decline and VODs are growing". Still none the wiser of what's changed in the last five years when the core narratives sound si similar.

VOD is on the increase but surfacing content to people is the hard task unless you have an abundant marketing budget. The easiest and fairly low cost way for the BBC to surface content is via the BBC Three linear channel.
Also by having a linear channel you drive thought and consideration amongst its target audience as there is a constant reminder that BBC Three exists - something you don't really have at the moment. Key anchor programmes will help drive awareness of BBC Three and make people aware that the linear and VOD options are available.

Interesting to see the BBC are now planning to broadcast a 'nightly news bulletin' on BBC Three - last time they tried that it got axed because no one was watching. Though that was in 2005, before BBC Three was universally available, I do wonder if it will be any more successful this time around.
In fact, reading further it looks like it will only be a brief 3-4 minute bulletin, rather than a full-blown programme as before.

I'm happy bbc3 is coming back it used to be my favourite channel I haven't watched it at all online. They should never have closed it and instead should of merged bbc2 and bbc2. Of course, they did have 60 Seconds for the rest of the linear channel's run.

No, it means The News Show/The 7 O'Clock News, which was axed in 2005. I remember watching the last one, where they announced "The programme began in 2003 because the BBC were told to do it. Now it's ending because the BBC have been told not to do it because it's a waste of money!" Actually that last show was great fun, Paddy O'Connell was the final presenter, but Eddie Mair did it for a while, and he and everyone else came back for the final programme to do pretty much a post-mortem on the whole thing. They did a compilation of all the silly things they'd done and after it Mair said "You know, if you had taken things a bit more seriously, you might not be getting axed!". It looked great fun, as any programme presented by those two was guaranteed to be, but the fact I only ever watched it when it had been axed rather sums up the problem with it, everyone who stumbled on it liked it, but nobody ever stumbled on it.

The 7 O'Clock News is what I'm talking about - originally a 15-minute news bulletin called The News Show. After Liquid News was axed, the 7 O'Clock News took part of Liquid News's budget, was extended to 30 minutes and became a more of a laid-back discussion-based show presented by the likes of Eddie Mair and Paddy O'Connell. So everything is condensed into those four minutes once BBC Three takes over from CBBC. If the new channel goes ahead as a final decision it will be interesting to see how they present news output there |
