The Fall of Kabul | News Coverage

More extraordinary pictures from the streets of Kabul on Sky News tonight, some of their team has been out filming by car and even talking with Taliban fighters.

Obviously a fairly tense time (despite the promises of peace), and you really get a sense of that from the reporting:

It really does feel like one of those historic moments.

The phone interview with the Taliban spokesperson yesterday was quite extraordinary, I think Yalda was on air without a break from one interview to the next for almost 90 minutes including that 30 minute interview.

Here's some details on what is happening with Afghan TV:

Women still allowed on TV... First appearance by a female anchor since Kabul fell I believe. However, as the TOLOnews owner said earlier, the Taliban have yet to establish their new Afghanistan, so this may become a thing of the past very shortly.

Here's some details on what is happening with Afghan TV:

There is (at time of writing) a live feed of the state broadcaster RTA at http://rta.live - for the past few days, every time I've looked in they've been broadcasting nothing but what appears to be pre-recorded Islamic religious programming, sometimes Qu'ran readings, sometimes a group of men in the studio discussing Islam. There's also a live stream on YouTube of a commercial channel called ATN News, but it mostly appears to be recorded material and ads/promos, I'm not sure if it's still broadcasting anything live.

On Sunday evening, some radio listeners outside Afghanistan heard the state radio broadcaster (on a high-powered medium wave frequency, so audible for a few hundred miles beyond the borders) switch at 7pm UK time from the previous normal programming to Taliban programming, again mostly Qu'ran recitals. RTA regional stations in areas taken over earlier have reportedly been replaced with a service called Voice of Shari'a.

Interestingly, Voice of America and Radio Azadi (aka RFE/RL) MW radio broadcasts from transmitters inside Afghanistan remained on the air with news and music, at least last night. They broadcast two services, one from a transmitter in Kabul and another from a site in the south-east of the country, near the Pakistan border. The Taliban have either chosen not to switch them off or haven't got round to it yet.

As with everything else about the Taliban's policies and practices, it will be very interesting to see how the media is allowed to operate within Afghanistan going forward. It's been over two decades since the Taliban last ran the country – there will have been considerable churn in terms of organisational leadership at every level within the Taliban during that time, and it will be interesting to see how changes in both media and technology over that span may have changed (or not) their perceptions and approach. I've been thinking a lot about the significance of mobile phones and social media in 2021 compared to 2001 – much of the video we've seen in the last few days, from ordinary Kabul streets to chaos at airports, has come from ordinary Afghans posting on Snapchat and other platforms. They, in turn, will have had far easier access to potentially-influential international media (not just news) through the internet than was conceivable in 2001. The same may be true for the Taliban.

It will be very interesting to see what impact all of this has on the Taliban's presumed regime going forwards. Will its leaders be more concerned about the potential for popular uprisings influenced and organised through social media, a la the Arab Spring? Or are the promises to television cameras and western journalists of a more tolerant doctrine merely performative? How truly tolerant will such a regime be towards foreign journalists, for example, who report things the Taliban don't like? Lots of unknowns, but it reaffirms how important the international/foreign media will be going forwards in helping to expose abuses and atrocities within the country.

Well, it was planned... not just an off-the-cuff call by Shaheen. I imagine like with many spokespeople you can probably relatively easily and quickly find his contact details via a source. He was on Sky News today, and has been on many other outlets in recent months.

Kate Adie needs to come out of retirement, she would be in her element reporting on all this

Wondered if Secunder Kermani is okay as he was still in Afghanistan late last week and hasn't been heard from since but he's safe and in Islamabad. Sounds like a case of a bit of unfortuante timing.

Obviously don’t want to dilute her coverage, as I think what Yalda delivered on Sunday was outstanding. But I notice from a tweet she was in fact wearing ripped jeans whilst providing the coverage. As I say, just thought I’d mention it.

Irrelevant and something you'd only be mentioning if you did want to "dilute her coverage".

I’m not trying to dilute or undermine what she delivered on Sunday. I’m just merely pointing out what I saw on a tweet after she came off air.
