Ideally news channels would have two streams - one simply the picture and the other with all the "information" as you suggest. Going off topic but how long did the HD sidebar last on Sky News?

For me tickers have largely become redundant now, partly thanks to how news channels use them and also because most people can get a summary of other news in their hands now. I wouldn't be a fan of permanent pushbacks on the news channel or on Breakfast, but they can be useful at key points - during the regional news for example. IIRC Midlands Today used to use them in the breakfast slot.

Yes, they were used for travel news IIRC. Heavily revered on the old place at the time.

I prefer the term ‘on screen information’ rather than ‘on screen clutter’ - the video aspect of the screen gives very little information most of the time - particularly on rolling news channels where it’s often just a short bit of video on loop.

Rather than less ‘clutter’ I’d personally have more! I’d have the ‘pull back’ (is that what it’s called, I’ve forgotten) pretty much a permanent feature.

It all needs using much more flexibly though. For example in the event of a breaking news story, but where not much is going on, carry on with other news in a box, but have bullet points/maps/video clips about the breaking story in another box.

I’m all about a very busy screen. There’s rarely a case when too much information is a bad thing.

I can’t disagree more. Television is about pictures not reams of text.

This hot weather has reminded me of an ep of Breakfast in 2003 or '04 during a heatwave. I seem to remember the whole show was presented by Dermot & Natasha from the Blue Peter garden, with Moira at the newsdesk in the studio. Does anyone else remember this or am I going crazy in the heat?

Would be nice to see something similar at Salford Quays, but I guess it's not nearly as practical as it was at the old TVC BP garden!

BBC Breakfast without its clock this morning. One simple thing and they can't even get that right. It's not even as if they have lower thirds on screen all the way through.

I'm glad you brought that up! I can't see the clock on the lower right of the screen (besides regional bulletins), and the names of interview guests and correspondents aren't popping up either.... :?

Louise had an LED clock which would have done, then put it on the sofa. Why can't they just put the time on the large screen between them?

This is probably why they don't have lower thirds all the way through on BBC Breakfast: because BBC Salford technology is too ramshackle to tolerate anything beyond a simple clock. It's amateurish.
