Interesting to see Sky Channel pre the Sky we know now. Those early satellite channels had a very unique style - much brasher and modern than the terrestrial ones but not wildly American either.

Interesting too that they were based at 31-36 Foley Street. That address being the former home to ATV London*, in the early 80s an ITN spin off called UPITN was based there and in the 90s it was the HQ of the ITC. More recently BBC Worldwide had offices there so it has quite a TV heritage. Seems its now been turned into flats.

UPITN syndicated ITN footage around the world - I know that when TV-am began they used UPITN because they couldn't agree a deal with ITN themselves about using their footage.

God, I remember those ads coming on when I was 13 or 14.

Scared the life out of me. What an amazingly effective campaign to be remembered after all these years. I bet it saved countless people's lives.

I've no idea who EJ Hearn is but someone's uploading his VHS collection onto YouTube. They're not great quality and uncatalogued but some interesting stuff if you can bear trawling through them.

This is the last hour and a bit of TVS and the first 15-ish minutes of Meridian. Interesting to see it all as it went out. There's also about 40 minutes of VHS shash for some reason

I have an abject feeling "E J Hearn" is one of those who pinches other people's videos. The description says "personal collection of old TV recordings, presentation from all the ITV regions from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond". There's a strong hint of editing to my mind - notice whenever you see "Tracking" its in the typical monospaced font, whereas when you see an on-screen graphic that doubles up as the timer and the audio source (Stereo or Mono) (see beginning of the video you embedded where it says "Play -1:35:50") its in an entirely different non monospaced font and looks to have been stuck on "top" of the scrambled resync. In reality (or in my experience anyway) that wouldn't have been seen until the picture reset. I've never had a video that has the ability to hold two fonts for its "presentation" and they are usually simple monospaced.

I'm not saying the whole channel is fabricated and it may be full of genuine gems that are actually from some video tapes out of an attic somewhere and that channel got around a lot back inn the day but... I suppose we can be thankful they haven't hacked 15 minutes of "oh God my ears!" music into it and presented the resulting fabrication as a genuine off-air recording.
