I guess it's fair to say, whatever the case, ETP-1 seemed to only make very brief appearances during the last few years of its use- from waht I've seen it seemed to be restricted to the few minutes after closedown, and the few minutes before startup- you were getting much more Test Card F on the BBC! Compared to the lengthy periods it got shown before Schools moved to Channel 4 and the Channel 4 Daily started. There's an IBA engineering announcements from 1985 outlining how it was shown then- at the very least you'd get it between 45-00 on the hour, alternating with 4-tel and Oracle with it being uninterrupted before 10AM, the hour before programmes started and at weekends.

Obviously it disappeared entirely at the start of 1993 (along with 4-tel on view). The first half of 1993 filled downtime with a caption with the time of the next programme, then 4-tel on view returned and was shown throught the night.

On a related note, it's a nightmare trying to search for this channel 4 closedown/4-tel on view stuff, so many of the "results" are cwilliams videos (which as we know he doesn't label as mocks)... and far too often I don't notice it's one of his until I click on it.

Though some of them did put out their own thing (usually colour bars of some sort) before startup or after closedown.

The ETP-1 generators (with the exception of the ones situated at C4 Charlotte St, and S4C Cardiff, identified from 1983 by the two horizontal lines above and below the IBA:CH4 ident) were all situated at each primary regional UHF transmitter site, and remote controlled from the appropriate ROC (although of course Emley and Black Hill had their ROCs sited at the transmitters)

You're right no ITV company had one on their premises.

The use of ETP-1 on ITV fizzled out before 1982, I suspect because the IBA wanted to make the test card synonymous with C4, to aid the tuning in of the channel.

Here in the Southern region (where of course the Test Card was 'born' at Crawley Court) Rowridge had the prototype installed, so we were the first to see it in the late 70s. My memory was Rowridge coming on most mornings at 8am, (and that in turn would 'wake up' Hannington and Midhurst a few minutes later) with ETP-1. At bang on 08:30 the IBA would switch Rowridge to Southern's station output (usually their colour bars) .That was also the point when Oracle became receivable, they didn't 'bridge' the data into the ETP-1 signal.
When C4 opened in 1982 , again the transmitters would come on just after 8am. The Rowridge ETP-1 would be there until again bang on 08:30, when the IBA would switch to Charlotte St (routed via TVS of course) and that ETP-1 (normally with music). Again, that was the point C4 Oracle etc became available

Speculation in the video comments suggests an over-running event such as the World Cup, but it's probably the interview mentioned in the news itself that's to blame.

Triangulating the date, it appears to be Wednesday 29 June 1994.

As for how it was done: Unless it was a live shot from a zoomed camera across the river, perhaps they had a film of Big Ben between, say 9:45pm and 10:45pm for all timing eventualities and just cut out the requisite five seconds or so adding a little zoom in post...

IIRC there are examples from throughout the 70s and 80s of "not quite 10pm" clockfaces used on NaT titles.

Yes, that's right - the interview was a whopping two and a half hours long, from 8-10.30. I remember Chris Evans talking about it on The Big Breakfast the next morning, remarking how many ad breaks there had been in it and, especially, how many times there'd been the Ford advert in them ("It was like they'd sponsored the programme!").

It was then repeated on Good Friday the following year, but in a slightly more palatable running time of, er, two hours.

I always find it really odd looking at clips of the first couple of years of that show that they took over the Pebble Mill space but barely made anything of it, with just the tiniest of windows showing the view. It could have been anywhere.
