Coronavirus effect on the production of tv shows

Strictly Come Dancing in 2020 did a very good job in keeping the show on air and only one case of Covid in the contestants - compared to the disaster of a series that was Dancing on Ice.

If Strictly keep their protocols which they had for 2020, along with a vaccinated/tested audience and crew - there should be limited disruption.

If Strictly could get an autumn series on air, in the middle of the autumn/early winter months, with no vaccine - then hopefully one year later, things will be much better.

DOI was unlucky to be fair. Just COVID might have been manageable. Someone getting injured they can cope with too. But both happened, and not just once either, resulting in them losing two weeks. It was the combination that screwed them over.

I think Corrie and Emmerdale being hit by several cases at the moment suggests any thoughts of lifting restrictions in their production remain some time off.

I think it will for a while. You only need to look at London’s West End to see how quickly one positive case can shut down a whole production if the crew/cast have been in close proximity.

The company I work for are gradually re-introducing “normality” over the rest of this year, so production teams will still be social distancing, working from home etc. to some degree through at least January. I doubt the talent on screen will move any quicker due to caution and good practice which is now in place.

In fact, I don’t think many people have bought into today as the big “freedom day” the government had hoped for, and most of us will just naturally dip our toes into more freedoms as the weeks and months go by and it feels safe to do so. There’s certainly a lot of mask wearing, distancing and general caution in London so far today - it doesn’t feel that different to last week.

I've got a few anecdotes myself.

I got on a bus this morning and the digital destination board still had "face coverings must be worn" under the place name. It's no longer the law to wear them, so Stagecoach should've reworded that, to say please wear them, not you must wear them. The local shopping centre also still has the same signs up about having to wear a face covering. Clearly, they didn't think it safe to tell customers they no longer needed a mask.

I helped my mum do a car boot sale yesterday, and honestly, it was pretty quiet. The potential customers who did come didn't seem to want to root through boxes of books, perhaps because of hygiene concerns. And people started packing up at 11.30am, about an hour earlier than expected (customers were only allowed onto the site at 9.30am). People don't feel safe to come out yet it seems. And what difference does one day make?

And a local nightclub has actually decided not to reopen immediately - they also closed a couple of weeks before they were forced to last year. They don't want to operate at anything less than full capacity, and don't think it's safe for that yet.

This so-called Freedom Day is anything but.

I think if daily contact testing becomes a replacement for self isolation then I think shows may loosen their own guidelines in the coming months.
