At least the article comments on Masterchef Australia and how the channel should focus on original in-house commissions but it's programming which will appeal to outside the BBC3 demographic that is going to rate well more than anything else. As with BBC Scotland, there is a way of getting around quotas and maximising viewing figures to prove that people want a channel but it is not the product that was envisioned and that's the problem.

Because I'm sure "Love in the Flesh" isn't going to get viewers and will just be mocked for being a "Love Island" knockoff.(15-04-2022, 07:30 PM)WillPS Wrote: BBC Three: relaunched live TV channel struggles to win viewers Not to say that BBC Three of the past was any better, considering that most of it's viewers seemingly only cared about Family Guy and American Dad repeats, and when you've not got those... well, who's watching the channel? Those who have long and hard campaigned for the channel to come back? And where's those "classic" BBC Three repeats then? BBC Three literally just feels like another BBC Scotland, a waste of money for a channel catering to a niche. Ironically I'd say I'd watch the latter more than I would the former, given that I am in BBC Three's demo and they've got a far better programming output, a music show, for one, some decent comedies being repeated on the channel and is a far better channel now than when it was back when it launched in just 2.5 years of twiddling it's thumbs and finding somewhat it's purpose. BBC Three doesn't have a purpose right now. It just seems to be there waiting for another "Normal People" or "Killing Eve" to serve what it was made to do. The proposals made the channel seem a lot more exciting in prospect when in reality, it's just an even worse ITV2. Many posters on the internet have said that audiences would prefer seeing "anime" on the channel or even see them pick up adult animated shows. In fact, I'd rather see BBC Three do more experimentation, see what audiences want rather than trying to shove a bunch of ideas at the wall and expecting it to suddenly strike a hit once or twice. Maybe do more "Funny in 15"s? Those were pretty inventive and in pre-Vine era, I'm sure the TikTokers of now would have a field day if it meant more eyes seeing them on TV.

I can’t say I’ve watched BBC Three at all apart from the premiere showings of RPDRUK Vs. The World.
They need to follow the E4 and ITV2 approach (and arguably the BBC Three mk.1 approach) of a mixture of imports and genres in order to provide something for everyone. That’s of course provided they do want the ratings. Currently just relying on the homegrown content means it kind of dies a death to those not already aware of the channels content. And they seem to be making every effort to not opt to go with content from BBC Three mk.1 - which is the right approach of course. But it lacks any motivation right now for anyone to actively watch the channel.

I’m not really sure what they should be doing, but it definitely feels like an uphill battle. Losing years of momentum and habit when they went online-only (as well as some prime EPG positions) have steepened the hill considerably.

They could do with a big new show, as I don't recall anything noteworthy since they relaunched on TV. I've not watched live but equally don't think I've watched anything from them on iplayer either.

BTW checking the schedules I saw that Monday the channel is showing repeats of Gavin & Stacey, so I am still confident about BBC Three, just give it a little bit of time, and it will become something amazing ;-)(16-04-2022, 11:51 PM)tellyblues Wrote:I think that arguably, BBC Three isn't pushing or setting itself apart from it's opposition. I assume things will get much better when BBC One HD is fully regionalised, but seeing it with a less prominent EPG position particularly on Freeview and in parts of the UK, Sky and Virgin, doesn't help at all. And programming wise, it's absolutely lacking right now with a solid identity, aside from Life and Death in the Warehouse and Zen Motoring a lot of its newer programmes feel like I'm watching ITV2 instead. Given that the BBC is now looking to cut some services to save money I'd imagine they'll want to grow the new BBC Three for the long term having just allocated £80m to the channel budget and relaunching it

What helped with BBC Three previously was they had Family Guy and American Dad as a hook to get viewers into the UK produced output over the whole year, which they don't have now.
Ideally they need another late night strand of adult animation that can be scheduled throughout the year that can hook in linear viewers to the tightly targeted young adult output outside of when RuPaul's Drag Race is on.

To be honest, I've always seen this as a white elephant, simply because the young audience stream and watch very little linear TV. My teenage kids don't know anything other than watching what they want when they want.
Far better IMO to invest in making iPlayer better - it obviously gets a lot of promo and there's a lot of awareness of it, but I don't think enough is made of just what you get for the price of Netflix in 4K. The showcase after the Ten also helped fill an otherwise dead period on One midweek. Likewise I'm not sure the BBC Scotland channel was necessary when a Scottish Six and enhanced opt outs on One and Two would work. Both seem sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut solutions IMHO. |
