What’s the purpose of ITV 2 these days?

It may be the same for other digital channels but what I find with ITV2 it is very noticeable they kind of have fallow periods throughout the years. A few weeks ago they had new British content virtually every night at 10pm, most of which running for about 6 weeks. And then once each series came to an end repeats took the slot (often Family Guy) and it seems to take a break from new programming until the next batch come along. Now no surprise they go a bit quieter during I'm a Celeb, and they are compensating somewhat with a late night run of the second series of Killer Camp, which flopped spectacularly in the US and feels a month late.

It'll probably be similar in the new year - The Cabins will run initially, then it'll probably go quiet for a bit before a series of programmes run in late winter/early spring, then another fallow period before Love Island.

You’ve absolutely nailed it there! And the problem is if you catch ITV 2 at the wrong periods like I seem to be doing it’s all just Family Guy etc. which don’t get me wrong I like occasionally but not back to back to back…

Do they still show Love Actually what feels like twice a week too?

ITV2 is meant to be for the 18-35's. I don't watch it because it is crass and exploitive.

That doesn't mean to say that they should get rid of it because people watch it for various reasons.

But I do believe that all the ITV channels should be rebranded to something like this:

ITV = ITV Entertainment
ITV2 = ITV Young
ITV3 = ITV Classics
ITV4 = ITV Action
ITVBe = ITV Reality
CITV = ITV Kids

At least we would know what each channel was all about for viewers of certain tastes.

That's worse than B1, B2, B3 etc. The ITV branding is very good - people know what to expect on each channel, but the numerals allow a bit of flexibility. I don't think on the whole though ITV2 should be showing the same content as ITV would during the daytime but channels do evolve and just as BBC2 can at times be BBC1's dumping ground, rather than an alternative to the main channel, perhaps ITV2 is heading in that direction too. I'd have thought though the soaps would surely trend younger than Tipping Point.

We already know what each channel is all about. We don't need this whole pigeon-hole exercise. They are general entertainment channels not specific genres (with the exception of CITV and ITVBe). You can believe what you like, doesn't mean we have to agree with you.

If you consider ITV2 to be crass and exploitive, there are always certainly 60 other channels available to watch instead, half a dozen streaming services or you just could just turn the TV off and, I dunno, read a book or something.

What's with the aggression? There is no need for it.

Surely you can disagree without being aggressive or being unreasonably rude about it.

I fail to see anything of the sort that could be seen as "aggression" in my post.

But if it makes you happy - Rob , would you like to intervene at this point please being the big cheese and all?

All I ask for is a reason as to why you disagree with me? Instead, you have a go at me because I have an opinion (albeit unpopular) about ITV2 and that I think ITV channels should be rebranded for certain reasons

And then you gave me needless advice about switching TV channels and reading a book (of which I have read plenty). Trust me when I say that I know how to fill my time productively.

And to top it off, I don't expect anyone to agree with me. I'm used to being a minority because I see things differently but that doesn't mean I'm either right or wrong. It just means I question everything and go into specific detail.

So what if my opinions are wrong in your eyes. The least you can do is question me for it and if Rob wants to come in, I'll look forward to what he says.

Renaming the main channel ITV Entertainment is never gonna fly. If folk (the average Joe public) couldn't get the hang of it being called ITV1 for many many years, then an even longer name is just not going to cut it.

ITV/UTV/STV is good enough for each nation/version of the main channel.

However I do believe when ITV Encore closed, ITV3 could have/should have took the name.

As for ITV2 and its identity crisis, maybe they should look at the random name of '10 Peach' in Australia as inspiration.

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Imagine ITV2 being rebranded as 'ITV Peach'. It would certainly add publicity to the channel.

I like the idea of ITV3 rebranded as ITV Encore. It gives a more classy feel to the channel like it's last incarnation.

Rebrands for the sake of rebrands rarely work and to be fair don't happen too often. UKTV made a success of it by actually ditching obvious genre based names. With Sky Movies it made sense to separate by genre rather than have 9 numbered channels, but I'm still not sure Sky Sports really benefitted from ditching SS1-5 for sport specific channels and similarly with Sky1 and Sky Living effectively being split similarly into genres in the last few years. The motivation there is different though - spreading content thinner to look like they're offering more to subscribers, something ITV don't really need to worry about.

P.S. And one of the worst things you can do with a channel aimed at the youth market is brand it as such. That's part of the reason no children's channel or strand has included "Children's" in it's branding for over 20 years.

It was as I am still in that age bracket (only just). I was watching stuff like American Idol and all the repeats from ITV1 at the time. But it was when they brought in programmes like TOWIE and Love Island that just made me turn off.
