I doubt it was Otis’s.

obviously I meant Dave Chapman we know Otis ended up working in the BBC canteen after that.

Sorry, but Emlyn the Gremlyn wasn't a patch on Otis, when I first started watching CBBC My Puppet era was Edd The Duck and Wilson (I had an Edd the Duck puppet too).

I use to think Dave was fab at doing Otis, also like Chris Jarvis doing the Anorak. Funny enough for me when CBBC was starting to change to the Bugs I had just turned 15/16 so was getting to old for CBBC so I never really saw much of that era.

I still have my Edd the duck although the squeaker stopped working about 2 decades ago. I was the same although I still watched CBBC after that up till about the 2007 rebrand on and off although a lot less when the UK top 40 ended in 2005.

Bobby the Banana has been cruelly overlooked here…

Are you the same person that thinks SMTV Live was crap and the 2000 revamp of Live & Kicking was better?
I'm sorry I've moved on past that because I know not everyone is going to agree with me, as I say we can agree to disagree, we all have our own opinions don't we, I'm not going to force everyone to agree with me.
Have you also moved on from leaving comments on my YouTube videos calling us idiots?

Yes I have and I do regret that, I know that everyone has a right to have different opinions.

Smile was my childhood ??

Wish it was as fondly remembered as Dick & Dom in Da Bungalow (loved that as well), I still remember playing the (very addictive!) Nev's Jam Buster game on the CBBC website; devastated when it got the axe in 2007.

Emlyn the Gremlin was probably one of the blandest puppets they ever had, and nowhere near the chemistry Otis had with the presenters. I seem to remember Emlyn being brought in around the time they were looking to lower the age demographic of CBBC, even though he looked like something that would pop up in a bad dream.

There was also Marvin P. Porcuvark who did the links on CBBC on Nick... the fact CBBC had a slot on Nickelodeon was strange enough by itself.

I loved Nev's games when I was little, Jam Buster and Bandit Bites were my personal favourites! ?
Bear Behaving Badly was also one of my childhood CBBC shows growing up.

Bobby the Banana was legendary - even if he didn't do very much! He got rather overshadowed when a certain duck turned up. Which reminds me...

Edd the Duck 6 years 1987 - 1993

Those dates aren't strictly correct, as Gordon didn't arrive until Christmas 1986 (surprisingly late on during Phillip Schofield's tenure), while Edd didn't turn up until late 1988.

I think the idea of having a children's continuity presenter being accompanied by a puppet wasn't a fully established one in the early days of Children's BBC, and I think happened more or less by accident - I can't remember the exact circumstances surrounding Gordon's arrival, but according to http://thebroomcupboard.co.uk/page2.html he came courtesy of Phillip's Auntie Diane, and was clearly popular enough with viewers to become a permanent fixture in the broom cupboard.

Bobby I believe was only seen throughout 1988, even when Edd first appeared later that year, not only was he bald, he made MUCH squeakier quacking sounds compared to the sax-reed ones we know and love today.

Was it 1989 when they gave him his iconic green moptop and his quacks were changed to the more familiar ones?

Andy Crane has said that he deliberately didn't have a puppet for the first few months to allow him to get established. It seemed a bit strange at the time that Edd continued with Andi Peters after Andy Crane left, while Gordon had left with Pip, but as Pip has said, he approached BBC Enterprises, as was, with the idea of doing some marketing about Gordon and they said they weren't interested so Pip kept the rights for himself and made absolutely loads of money out of the merchandising. Clearly the Beeb weren't going to pass up on the opportunity for the second time so Edd was very much CBBC's puppet, not Andy Crane's.

In Richard Marson's Blue Peter Diaries, he talks about Smile, because he wanted to hire Barney Harwood as the new Blue Peter presenter, and Barney wanted to join, but they wouldn't let him leave Smile. Marson went to see the Controller of CBBC to argue that he should be allowed to do it because he and Barney wanted it to happen, and that Smile was a crap show (he said Barney was the best thing about it, by miles) and Blue Peter was far more important. But they said it wouldn't be fair on Smile, and Barney's agent complained bitterly to Marson about him being messed around. Marson says he was delighted when Barney finally joined Blue Peter, years later.

I never really understood the idea of Smile, it just looked to me like the worst examples of zero-budget, studio-bound Saturday morning shows like Scratchy & Co and Mashed, but it carried on for ages.

Would that have been to replace Simon or Matt then when they left, so the role Gethin ultimately got?
