I'm not sure. If they had had some notice you'd like to think they could have pre-recorded something to spare Amy from having to announce it in that manner. Of course she might have wanted to be the one to make the announcement.
Judging by the number of quotes on the BBC website article I assume it has been known for a while and embargoed.

What awful news. He was so spritely and felt like he had so much more to give when he left the BBC just 20 months ago. Was a tragic loss.
Can’t help but feel so sorry for Amy there. Must have been so difficult to deliver the news of a former colleague and friend probably not long after hearing the news herself.

I’m stunned and devastated by this news, in much the same way I was almost 17 years ago, when Richard Whiteley died. Harry was Look North, it’s not been the same without him. Not only was he an excellent presenter, he was a lovely bloke. Thoughts with his family at this terribly sad time
Extremely sad news, especially as he had a very young child
This is such, such sad news that I can't even process it at the minute, he absolutely loved Yorkshire and Yorkshire loved him back just as much

I was also put in mind of when Richard Whiteley died - both of them Yorkshire broadcasting legends.
I do think there’s something unique and very special about long-serving regional TV news presenters. They almost feel like members of the family - much more so than any national broadcasters. It feels like a genuinely sad day in Yorkshire.
Although I wonder if, in the current internet and multi-channel era, today’s regional presenters will ever reach the iconic status of the likes of Harry Gration, Mike Neville, Tony Wilson, Bob Warman, Fred Dinenage, etc..

The ‘When Harry met Claire’ adverts when Harry returned to Look North alongside Claire Frisby in the late 90s didn’t work quite in the same way.

I was watching Harry's final interview with Simon McCoy on YouTube tonight and he said he did four years in Southampton with Sally.

I’m in shock at this news, I can’t really believe it as we didn’t even know he was ill
Only a few weeks ago he hosted a ‘music and memories’ show at York Theatre alongside Christine Talbot and he was on Radio Leeds promoting it.
I’m guessing there will be a full tribute on Monday, and probably extended coverage on Calendar as well

Given it was breaking news on both Look North's this end of the world I would think it was 'sprung' on her. Also there is no way they would have hidden it at the end. They were simply reporting breaking news and sad news as he was an ex colleague and friend at that.
