Regular Breakfast viewers with no interest in sport may be a bit disgruntled for a couple of weeks, but once normality resumes it'll soon be forgotten.

Actually quite enjoyed the radio-style 5 min news bulletins this morning (and good to see NWT’s Annabel Tiffin getting a national appearance).

Still think, as a format, the pacey short updates are missed from tv - a well-crafted short update can be much more useful for some than a 30-minute bulletin, and you’d think would appeal more to a different audience too (and be useful to package for online).

Persian and Arabic do this. I agree the format isn't used much on domestic TV since the close of BBC4 and 60 Seconds.

Persian summaries, at the top of the UK hour, are either 90 seconds or 3 minutes and follow a 30 minute bulletin, preceding a 26 or 54 minute programme. There is also one at the bottom of the UK hour at 17:30 UK time.

Arabic summaries vary in length between 3 and 10 minutes, at the top of the UK hour, and precede a programme.

Annabel Tiffin - former North West Tonight presenter but now fronts the Sunday Political show since they went single headed.

I don't think though reading short 5 minute bulletins on a Sunday during the Olympics lines her up for Louise's job. I don't think she's even done any of the Sunday shows, unlike Roger Johnson.

I preferred the Dan Walker/Sam Quek pairing on Saturday compared to Gabby Logan/Sam Quek on Sunday. However Sam has a lot of potential to do general non-sports output. Compared to Alex Scott, she's a natural.

Considering they even air Breakfast on Christmas Day or on Sunday mornings when MOTD means most of it isn’t on BBC One, it’s slightly strange there is no domestic news service being provided for two weeks

This mornings content was a much better start to a Monday morning - hopefully sent people off to work with a smile and the content from 7am onwards was far worth sacrificing chewing over the latest covid developments yet again.

I don't really get though why they opted for an extended weather forecast when Wales, Scotland and NI went to news - a bulletin for England would have made far more sense.

I would say it's because the pandemic makes staff shortages happened. The current situation is not like the Commonwealth Games in 2006 when there are no pandemics and no budget shortages. More staff would be required in Salford and London. Salford would need more staff to produce a three-hour live programme including at least 4 presenters doing live news, reports, sports, business, weather and interviews, while London would require an extra newscaster in studio and more gallery staff to do a couple of hourly/half-hourly news summaries plus weather forecasts on BBC 1 since Salford already do something else in the studio. Simulcasting with BBC WN would save both money and staff, so why shouldn't they?

Besides, as someone else in this forum said, (sorry, I can't remember who ) the BBC bosses want viewers to watch the Summer Games, not the news because plenty of money was invested in it. Even if it's broadcasted on BBC 2, there's no local news for England because regional newsrooms priority is the 6.30 nightly program, and mainly, regional opts for England are no longer available on BBC 2.

Well if you want some proper service providing news then you could tune in to the NC with 26-minute bulletins of world news every hour or going somewhere else to enjoy an alternative breakfast program which both Sky News and ITV provide, but surely not the same as the regular BBC Breakfast.
