Westcountry's approach stood out because for the first time, they seperately branded their weekend output. Westcountry Latest was the regular bulletins from the bulletin studio, whilst Westcountry Live was the hour long programme. All Saturday and Sunday bulletins were branded Westcountry Weekend Latest. After a few months, Westcountry News was introduced as an overarching brand for all news programmes, including Westcountry Live. Just about a year later, they dropped the names Westcountry Latest and Westcountry Weekend Latest and all the bulletins just became Westcountry News.
That approach continued in 1999, when Westcountry Live was cut down to 30 minutes because of the new ITV Evening News. A new 30 minute lunchtime programme, Westcountry Lunchtime Live, was introduced then, and what had previously been the Friday what's on slot on Westcountry Live was spun off into its own programme Westcountry Weekend, usually airing at 5.30pm on a Friday.
Westcountry Update was basically Westcountry's version of TSW's South West Week. Always thought that was a strange name of a review of the week show, but it kept that name all the way til it ended.
