I suspect its more that the programme overran than anything else and whoever was presenting didn't realise they were on the way out (or couldn't hear the gallery).  
That's unlikely as it was a pre-recorded programme and had a definite end of the copyright caption. As is noted in the comments it was something that was done occasionally,a notable example was TVS's epilogue programme Company which not only did it at the end but the beginning too

My thinking was more that if that happened today the programme would probably just get pulled completely. If not the death would have been mentioned at the start, not the end, which it doesn't sound like it was here
