The BBC Brand Refresh has been nominated for a D&D Award. I think seeing this is really interesting, almost like a case study.

And the sonic branding too.

The work of Wolff Olins and Zelig Sound, even if it is not as neat as the masterpiece Lambie-Nairn achieved in 1997, has grown on me. I think it has all the potential to be used on its full form; sadly, the way the rebrand has been handled makes this attempt to make the entire BBC brand unified quite a mess. Still having doubts on the new blocks, however; but it has a real purpose, so I understand the basis behind the rebrand (as shown on the case study submitted).

The sonic branding is good, but not easily identifiable and unique in reflecting the BBC as a world-class broadcaster reinventing itself for the streaming generation; even if tries to be a reinvention of the B-B-C interval signal used by the World Service's non-English programming, it sounds too similar to other streamers' original front caps.

Overall, after seeing it all has a common sense, I think Wolff Olins and Zelig Sound have achieved a good job overall refreshing the BBC brand, but there are quite important misses in the work. However, the overall execution might be able to win one of the Pencils on Wednesday or Thursday, which will be available to see online for free.
