I assume these aren't seen in the UK or do they have to be played when live race coverage begins?

They’re typically played about five minutes or so before the formation lap - they’ve replaced the old “Sweeping Curves” animation that used to be played at that point - and I think all TV rights holders are obliged to take them for live coverage.
