iPlayer has gone far beyond a 'catch up' service, and is now a core BBC service. If they never evolved it then it wouldn't be here today (or at least as popular as it is today) probably.
Like it or not, a lot of people now use it to watch live (or restart live), binge on box sets and also view bonus 'red button' type streams - especially during sporting events. It's much, much more than the catch up service it was conceived as.
Am I going to sit down and watch a show at 9pm on a particular channel nowadays? Probably not. If I've forgotten to record it then iPlayer or similar is where I go. Similarly, if I do catch something live, then I can often go to iPlayer to watch the rest of the series nowadays too (The Cleaner being a recent case in point). Many people are the same.
Advertising iPlayer on trailers is absolutely valid and isn't going anywhere. I'd even place bets to say that iPlayer and other OTT services will be the core way of watching TV within the next 20-odd years.
