In my view, it's all about consistency.

If you're presenting a news programme and you wouldn't have referred to Gordon Brown as simply 'Gordon' or to Theresa May as simply 'Theresa' on air, then you shouldn't be referring to Boris Johnson as simply 'Boris'.

It really is as simple as that for me.

I get where you are coming from, but I think it’s more nuanced than that. I’d say people in the public eye tend to get referred to by whichever of their first name or surname is most distinctive. ‘Boris’ is more distinctive than ‘Johnson’, whereas ‘Cameron’ is more distinctive than ‘David’. David is a terribly bland name
