Reports: Channel 4 win UEFA Nations League Rights

Daily Mail reporting Channel 4 has won the rights for England matches this summer in the UEFA Nations League, if true wonder that means for Sky Sports rights or other Home Nations rights.

That is great news for Channel 4. Will they show them on the main channel when they get to be aired or on More4 or E4.

Thats a huge coup for C4 - especially given the nature of the opposition and the absence of a summer World Cup.
Be interesting to see where the other nations games end up, though the initial Scotland and Wales ones have had to be rescheduled due to the delayed World Cup play off, which presumably still falls under the existing Sky deal. Am I right in thinking this would be the first competitive international, or friendly for that matter, for any of the mens home nations teams to air on C4?

I’ve read of a Scotland game against Australia(?) in the 1980s which ended up on Channel 4 as it clashed with TV-AM. Not sure if that was a competitive international or a friendly. In terms of non home nations, there have been some. The Italy v Russia playoff for the 1998 World Cup being was on C4 (in the Football Italia days). Definitely remember the match in Italy being live, can’t remember about the Russian leg of the tie.
Also, I think this means that live England matches will have been shown on all five terrestrial channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4 and C5).
I guess it's possible Sky will retain the rest as they have with the qualifiers. The England games themselves probably don't drive subscriptions too much, especially with ITV having the qualifiers and most friendlies, but I suspect they are a significant proportion of the cost so probably makes financial sense for Sky to let someone else take that burden.

It was a competitive match, it was their play-off against Australia for the 1986 World Cup. The Australian leg was an 8.30am kick-off and broadcast live on Channel Four in October 1985. Of course, in those days C4 was basically ITV2. In those days the Beeb and ITV would faithfully split all televised football 50-50, so they would always take it in turns to show an England game or have one leg each of a two-legged tie. I would assume that had the Beeb had that match in Australia they'd have shown it on BBC2 with Breakfast Time taking priority. I was trying to remember what England match had been live on BBC2 but Sweden vs England, the Terry Butcher match of course that saw them qualify for the 1990 World Cup, was on BBC2 in September 1989, as was the match against Poland two years later where they qualified for Euro 92. Both of those were 6pm kick-offs and the news took priority on BBC1. Hard to imagine now sports rights go for millions but in those days England matches would work around existing schedules, not the other way round.

I do wonder whether part of this is just Channel 4 going for broke with seemingly nothing to lose.
I also wonder who might be part of the Channel 4 team, if it happens. Gabby Logan’s got to be a contender for hosting duties and Clive Tyldesley for commentary? Although Channel 4 would also probably like to do something a bit different.

They had James Richardson back for the FIFA Club World Cup and he'd be welcome by most fans. Can't recall if they had their own commentator or just took the World feed for that but I think they need to look beyond Clive really.

The thing is, quite a lot of people (including me) would say S4C is not the same as Channel 4.

I wonder if 4 might try to strike a deal for the Champions League final if it features at least one English club. Considering BT Sport have to make it it free to watch online anyway and Channel 4 would likely both pay a large amount for it and give them loads of free advertising it would probably be worth it for BT.

Kind of feel if there was a deal to be struck there it would have been before considering at least one English team making the final is now quite common.
What might be more likely is a deal with Sky for the World Cup play off between Wales and potentially Scotland, especially if this new deal sees C4 take the England games but Sky retain the rest.
