The thing is, it was in 1080p for a while, on connected TVs and set top boxes. It dropped back to 720p at the start of the pandemic and hasn't returned since.

Personally, I think the quality is acceptable. But it seems strange given the level of competitions from Disney and Netflix that they aren't trying to compete on picture quality. I haven't got either Netflix or Disney so I can't make a comparison

I have that from a good source. It helps that it's 50fps which makes up for the lower resolution. It's more noticeable on NOW without Boost when it's 720p/25fps.

Is it? I don’t think people choose streaming services based on picture quality above a certain point. It’s not like Sky vs Virgin Media vs Freeview where you can watch the same content in different qualities/reliability etc. If I want to watch Sex Education I can only watch it on Netflix, if I want to watch Vigil I can only see it on iPlayer. There will always be those who can only bear to watch stuff in the highest quality - and the different tiers of Netflix are evidence of that - but most of us choose our streaming service based on content. It would be nice to have better quality, and I’m not arguing that they maybe should offer it, but I don’t think it’s something that the BBC would *compete* with as such.

I haven't got either Netflix or Disney so I can't make a comparison To be fair, the iPlayer does have 50fps which Disney and Netflix don't, and I think that makes more of a difference (on content that was made that way anyway) to picture quality than 1080p would if it was limited to 25fps.

iPlayer is now available on PS5, with UHD support. But the PS5 doesn't support HLG... Does this mean you get the UHD resolution, but no HDR?

Also when you first unbox the console, it enables HDR by default for everything, be it media apps, PS5 native games or backwards compatible games. iPlayer forces everything on HDR until you disable it in the settings

The Fire TV Cube for some reason has HDR on as default, so it'd show me UHD shows on iPlayer.
As I have a 1080p tv, I had to turn off the HDR default settings to stop getting that option.

iPlayer is rolling out 1080p streams on certain devices - not before time! But the list of devices is fairly limited. For example, 2019 LG TVs are supported, but not 2020 or 21.

If your TV is listed, you should be able to get 1080p 50fps streams now. Is the iPlayer app set to the best video quality in the settings?
