You sort of wonder why they bothered. I wonder what the viewing figures will be as Channel 4 news is on at the same time. I presume BBC 1 wasn’t an option and BBC 4 is also showing Glastonbury. They could have put it out on the BBC News Channel at 10:30 maybe?
Or just give it the night off is showing 25 year old content from Glastonbury can't wait half an hour.

Overall though I do think Newsnight could do a much better job for BBC News now than BBC2 as it's flagship evening show, airing say at 9pm, with a repeat (updated if needs be) at 11pm on BBC2.

There's no chance that Newsnight would end up on the News Channel, too expensive for one and a move to BBC One is even less likely.

Because it's clearly not Studio 54D. My gut is telling me that it's Studio K....
I guess they couldn't use 54D as BBC Persian were still on air at 19:00.

If this is Studio K, then it's had a serious upgrade . I thought that used to be a 'Multi-Purpose Area' with windows on to office space?

It doesn't look that small. It served a purpose for the night in view of the amended timing.

Doesn't the 7pm timing actually exclude Salford as NWT will just be coming off air?

I believe the scheduling was due to a misunderstanding... Newsnight said they were doing half hour on Hancock and they thought it was an episode of Hancock's Half Hour Big Grin

I had wondered whether they had planned not to show Newsnight at all but then changed their minds because of the Matt Hancock story. Anyone have a newspaper or TV listings guide?

It seems that Studio K has had a massive refurb in recent years

It was scheduled.

Newsnight is one of those shows, like question time, which I think may not have any real purpose in the modern day and age. I am surprised it has survived so far. The whole moving the broadcast to different places is even more bizarre.

I think they still prove on occasion there is a place and a need for long form reporting and analysis but everytime there are cuts Newsnight is first in the firing line.

Studio K has never been refurbished, but it is relatively new. I believe you're thinking of Studio L, which has been refurbished/upgraded at least three times.

Studio L started as "52L MPA" (multipurpose area) with no walls and hosting only prerecorded material for social media videos by various language services with no TV presence, operated by radio studio managers. They were then replaced with TV tech ops in the build up to more daily live programmes preparing to use it, including Swahili. There was a distinct lack of gallerystudio infrastructure, eg there were only 4 audio lines going in and out - so 3 mics and foldback, if you wanted a fourth mic we unplugged the foldback circuit!

A few years later it received glass walls after an incident where Swahili TV were broadcasting a special programme dedicated to Nelson Mandela after his death, surrounded by office chatter and laughter from the adjacent newsroom. As the floor needed to come up they put in more infrastructure and totally reconfigured the lighting grid to LED lights. However they continued to use ITX as the playout software which really didn't play ball with ENPS, and was basically impossible to use for changing the running order.

Then it was upgraded again for MOSart, which was the first installation in use by Languages TV.

Perfect analogy!

The fact that one of the BBC's flagship news & current affairs program has been put out of a BBC World Service language services clip studio/tv podcast studio just feels wrong

Studio K isn't a WS "clip/podcast" studio. It's a fully fledge live broadcast studio used for multiple live TXs every day which generate audiences that Newsnight can only dream of.

Looking very dark outside the Newsnight window tonight. Power cut outside?
