Don't know much about this but just stumbled across it on the EPG - a 24 hour music event to promote defending the planet and ending poverty, with performances across six continents. It'll air on the BBC in the UK, ABC in the US and Channel 9 in Australia amongst others, plus stream on Apple, YouTube and Twitter. Includes the likes of Elton, Kylie, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes and Coldplay.

Global Citizen has just announced Global Citizen Live, an epic 24-hour global broadcast with events and performances filmed across seven continents to unite the world to defend the planet and defeat poverty.

With performances and live events in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America, Global Citizen Live will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25, and will air on ABC, ABC News Live, BBC, FX, iHeartRadio, Hulu, YouTube, Twitter, and more.

The once-in-a-generation 24-hour global broadcast will include simultaneous live music events featuring the world's greatest artists, activists, and world leaders at iconic locations across the globe. Cities include Lagos, Rio de Janeiro, New York City, Paris, London, Seoul, Los Angeles, and Sydney. And even more locations, as well as location-specific details, are yet to be announced.

Artists and entertainers participating in the global broadcast special include: Adam Lambert, Alessia Cara, Andrea Bocelli, Angélique Kidjo, Billie Eilish, BTS, Burna Boy, Camila Cabello, Christine and the Queens, Coldplay, Davido, Demi Lovato, DJ Snake, Doja Cat, Duran Duran, Ed Sheeran, Femi Kuti, Green Day, H.E.R., Hugh Jackman & Deborra-lee Furness, Keith Urban, Lang Lang, Lizzo, Lorde, Metallica, Rag’n’Bone Man, Ricky Martin, Shawn Mendes, The Lumineers, The Weeknd, Tiwa Savage, and Usher, with more to be announced in coming weeks.

It begins on BBC1 at 5.30pm, breaking for Strictly before airing at 9.20pm, switching to BBC2 at 10.10pm and back to BBC1 for three hours at Midnight. Nothing on the red button, or indeed on BBC Radio, so I guess the rest is exclusively to the online partners.

Such events used to be a big deal but this seems to have little hype. Always interesting though to have an event which brings international broadcasters together.

Probably because they used to be very rare whereas now they seem to be more frequent

Trailer just aired on BBC One. Amongst the acts trailed the presenting line-up featured was Ana Matronic in New York, Clara Amfo in Paris and Roman Kemp in London.

Emma Willis and Ade Adepitan also hosting, probably linking the thing together. Emma Willis a bit of an odd choice really as I don't think she's done anything for the BBC since The Voice moved over to ITV other than perhaps the odd guest stint on The One Show.

The one year they don't have a week or two to fill between the launch of Strictly and the first live show and they actually have an event which would have nicely filled the schedule.

The BBC seem to be focusing on London, Paris and New York. Presumably the LA event follows the New York event. They do mention BTS in Seoul in the Saturday broadcast but the Global Citzen website suggests the 24 hours begins with the beginning of the BBC broadcast, so presumably whatever happens in Seoul and Sydney will be the next day.

Are the acts actually live though? I remember people getting excited about the last Global Citizen event during lockdown but it was all just pre-recorded clips.

Might be live as in "performed live", ie on stage/concert/acoustic. Not live as in "live from Wembley, vs ". The event spans seven continents, it would be hard to have everything live, pretty sure a chunk of Live Aid didn't appear "live" but appeared later (more the case on the US side I suspect though) off a tape somewhere.

The fact it is airing before and after Strictly will probably ensure it rates fairly well

Sorry to quote myself, but it turns out the Chelsea Flower Show is why they can't use BBC Two.

Well that is only highlights so doesn't need to air in that slot, but BBC4 is also free with just standard programming whilst it isn't scheduled for the red button either with a looped Music of 1991 programme on all day - so it looks like it'll be iPlayer only, when really this is the sort of event the red button was made for.

Agree with Andrew that it sandwiching Strictly should help it but generally speaking such music events on BBC1 have rated quite low in recent years.
