The Game Show Thread
Hang on I've completely misread it, these are different episodes aren't they? I thought it meant the same episodes were going to shown in an extended form on BBC1!

Strange because the BBC Two episodes will be 30 minutes, while the BBC One set will remain at 45 minutes.

Interesting and... strange. Presumably the extra 15 mins will just be filled with chat because they can't possibly edit out parts of the game that actually have an impact on the results.

The budgets for BBC Two half hour 6pm quizzes are lower than ever now, it's increasingly impossible to pitch anything that comes anywhere near the money they're offering so expect more of these types of commissions where can get more from their buck in the future.
There were 30 minute and 45 minutes edits of Celebrity Eggheads, although only difference to the game play was the final round having 5 questions instead of three with two of those questions cut out of the 30 minute episodes, obviously a lot of the chat was cut out too. Although I imagine in the case they’ll indeed just produce the 30 minute shows as just that. Then I’d again they’d arguably have more value if they could also fill 45 minute slot with the same production.

That what I was trying to point out, it's 15 30 minutes episodes which could be done as part of the block filming along with the 45 minute episodes.
I would guess that this means Unbeatable will go out in the half 6 slot, after House of Games. Because if it was to run in BBC Two during the afternoon, what would be the issue with a 45 minute run time?

Is it a backdoor way to see if the format fits the BBC Two 6pm hour better? Seeing as Lightning has been axed and they haven't really tried any other half hour formats since that and HoG.
It does surprise me that BBC Two hasn't looked at doing a UK version of Hard Quiz, it's a show that doesn't have prize money and would be the bridge between House of Games and the smart quizzes.
Mastermind also airs in Australia in a daily format - 16 weeks of heats and weekly finals and then a finals week with the 16 weekly winners and grand final. Not sure that would be right for the UK version though - and indeed not really any sign BBC2 want to go in with a significant commitment to quiz shows in the 6.30pm slot. It really has been just a handful of weeks a year since House of Games became a regular in the 6pm slot.

A 30 min slot would suit Unbeatable far better as it is too long and padded out at 45 mins with half a dozen questions.

Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik are officially confirmed as new hosts of Jeopardy! going forward. Ken will host during the first half of the season (September-December) and the Tournament of Champions, as well as a new pro tournament called Second Chance; Mayim Bialik will take over for the second half of the season (January-May/June, given she's also doing Call Me Kat), and will host the National College Championship; additionally, she will host a new ABC network spin-off, Celebrity Jeopardy!, from October, and will continue doing ABC primetime spin-offs and specials, as well as to host new tournaments being developed for the syndicated version.

Funny isn't it how we spend all year saying gameshows are too dragged out then are seemingly baffledwhen a shorter version of ashow is announced.

As for Jeopardy no surprise really but get the impression fans would have preferred Ken full time.

Only really because it's in addition to longer episodes. Also odd having two separate runs on two different channels but I guess there aren't many new formats kicking about.

Wonder if it might be worth rerunning some of the "Quizzy Monday" shows in the slot rather than commissioning. Some does get an afternoon airing (Mastermind is on at the moment).

I don't think they really lend themselves to being repeated daily due to the episode count plus, UC is 37 episodes and OC is 28 episodes.
