Does bad design make you less inclined to watch certain channels or shows? - johnnyboy - 04-02-2022

Maybe it's just me but I feel a lot less inclined to watch a channel or a show if I dislike their graphical presentation.

I didn't like these Sky graphics at all and I found myself watching the channel more after the 2005 relaunch.

GB News's graphics are awful - what a mess. It's completely missing an eye to detail on spacing, etc.

Network 7, the show that switched me on to TV pres properly, had a brilliant stripped back anarchic presentation style but went a bit tabloidy and corporate with their second series. Didn't enjoy it as much.

Always hated TTTV pres but this one looked like something vomiting Slush Puppies into gullies on an incline. Was even less inclined to watch it after that but I did like the 1989 ITV rebrand in which TTTV took full part.

Compared with the big expansive studio News 24 came from before the crime that was the 1999 rebrand, this looks like the lobby to some corporate accountant. The on-screen graphics were awful too.

I could go on but I'll spare everyone.

Maybe it's some form of undiagnosed Aspies (my wife is convinced I'm on the spectrum) but I feel a physical jar to what I consider bad design. It really gets to me like dogs barking or people eating with their mouth open.

I really dislike BBC Reith and the News Channel lower third. The Outside Source and Context titles don't seem to fit what the world's largest broadcaster should "look like".

Is it just me?

I think it's also me as well, I also have a look at the design ,particularly of a news channel. To be fair though I wouldn't call the 1999 BBC rebrand a 'crime'' it's still miles better than what BBC News is now, in my humble opinion. I also tend to agree this could be because of Asperger syndrome, I have that syndrome so I think that's the reason

Interesting question given the purpose of this place. Can't think of anything at the moment where a design was so bad that has made me switch off from something I would otherwise watch but good design can certainly bring you to a show, channel or product and I'm with you on the Sky News 2005 look compared to what came before it. It was a similar case with the ITV News Channel in early 2004.

Interesting topic, johnnyboy - providing folks' responses remain respectful and people keep comments about what they consider to be 'bad design' constructive and relevant to the discussion.

I must admit, how visually appealing (or not) I find a channel's presentation to be has affected my viewership in the past; I switched from BBC News to Sky News circa 2012 solely because I found the way it was all presented so much more interesting and appealing on Sky News, so it can definitely have an impact.

Funny how design can affect your decisions, isn't it?

I really liked the lower third and most of the graphic packages after the BBC upped sticks so I went from watching Sky News to BBC News.

Do you remember when Sky News HD launched? I loved the extra graphics they put on the right hand of the screen - pity they dropped it but it would have created all sorts of work for the production team, I would imagine.

It's strange but I sort of feel this genuine sense of loss when a design I like is no longer used. I thought the caption-type pres of CNNI in the mid-2000s was superbly thought out and implemented.

Just look at this...

You could see far more of the picture and the captions didn't take up unnecessary space.

Arguably all a bit 'information overload' but for a pres geek - ahem, I mean 'enthusiast' - like me, I loved it!

My symptoms for 'pres enthusiast' came in and around 2007. My first case of it was when I actually stopped watching BBC Two for a while when the 'pres mess of 2007' came around.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I started watching CBBC simply for the links (Ed and Oucho were great!) and... the idents. Once the link was over, I'd tune into another channel until the next link.

No. But it is terminal.

Better book a VCR Test then.

One has to wonder if there is a correlation between PES (Presentation Enthusiast Syndrome) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). I know I'm positive on both counts.

Going back to the original point raised by johnnyboy, I don't think I'm ever inclined to stop watching something because of poor design (unless the design is so bad, it becomes a noticeable distraction), but I'd definitely more inclined to watch something if the design is good.

EDIT: Just realised that my signature certainly emphasises the ASD point.

I reckon RT would be a much more successful propaganda machine if it didn’t have such hideous branding.

Does bad design make you less inclined to watch certain channels or shows? - Mr Q - 05-02-2022

The sort of question on which members of this forum are definitely not representative of the wider public!

At the margin, yes, I'm more likely to watch programming that is packaged nicely. The same is true in terms of visiting websites or reading newspapers. Hell, my choice of supermarket or bank is almost certainly influenced by some aspects of design.

That said, design on its own isn't enough. You can have a world-class design and production values, but if the underlying content is rubbish, then I'm not interested. By the same token, if the product itself is sufficiently high quality, then poor design isn't going to stop me from consuming it.

But in most cases - including in the world of TV - there is often a choice between different alternatives that are of similar content and quality. And if one of those alternatives has what I consider a vastly superior design, then there's a fair chance that's the one I'll gravitate to.

Great topic! Nice one! For me it's all about the information. Sometimes I watch in silence with subtitles as I'm partially deaf and like quiet, but sometimes have loud without.

So getting the balance right, a mix of content of video alongside graphics where relevent is great.

Tickers or flippers are a must for me, so I can dip in or out. Just don't cover half the screen like they do in some countries and that's a winner

Talking of tickers, flippers etc. when there is a news event I will usually opt for whoever has the least graphics on screen, which is usually ITV if they're covering it. The BBC and Sky taking up the lower thirds with a solid "Breaking News" strap is really off-putting for me, but clearly the opposite for others. I like the pictures to tell the story though.
