2022 Winter Olympics - RhysJR - 19-12-2021

At the time of writing, there are 47 days until the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in and around Beijing, China.

This will be the second Winter games and third overall under the current deal between the BBC and Eurosport, though the first where Europort are the primary rights holders. This means that the BBC will be able to show up to two simultaneous streams of live coverage, and Eurosport will be able to show all the action on their linear channels and on Discovery+.

Like Tokyo and Peyongchang in recent years, the time zone makes coverage a little awkward for UK viewers. Beijing is currently eight hours ahead of the UK, meaning a likely live coverage window starting at around 01:00 and finishing in the early afternoon. I can't find a start time for the ceremonies, but presumably they will start at 20:00 Beijing/12:00 London again.

In terms of coverage, there seems to be little detail of what both broadcasters plans are set to be, but I think it is reasonable to suggest that both broadcasters will be mainly fronting coverage from the UK once again as some virus is still circling the globe. Of course the BBC were based in Salford in 2018; personally I hope if the BBC are presenting from Salford we see an effort more like that of 2021 than 2018.
Eurosport have in the last month launched a new magazine show, Winter Pass, which is hosted weekly by Radzi Chinyanganya and Orla Chennaoui. Only the first episode is available on Discovery+, but that featured Radzi hosting the show from the Cube on the Alpine Ski World Cup in Levi, Finland, and was a mixture of round-up reports of the week's winter sport action and some features, such as Radzi having a figure skating masterclass. A lot less talk but also less action than Ski Sunday is how I would describe it. The below trailer also shows some shots of the look for the Eurosport Cube, a look that is designed in the same vein as the 2020 Olympics design.

Struggling to get excited for this one for a multitude of reasons but the BBC's coverage being so curtailed doesn't help, especially as the Discovery/Eurosport multi-stream offering just wasn't a smooth experience to navigate.

The Eurosport linear coverage was pretty poor, certainly on the extra channels which were limited to certain sports, and aimed at continental audiences so didn't really cover sports the UK is usually interested in.

Scratch_Perry post_id=59247 time= user_id=2034 Wrote:So what was wrong with BBC's 2018 Winter Olympics presentation?

Nothing really. What I was trying to allude to was that I far preferred the studio used for the 2020 Olympics rather than the studio used in 2018. The green screen background was really well put together and looked great and quite realistic on screen. The 2018 studio felt a lot more basic and didn't look as good on screen for me. There was nothing wrong with 2018's presentation, I'd have preferred coverage on site but can understand why it was not and was more than happy with it at the time, but 2020 was a step above that and I'd rather that quality and style of studio was kept for next year rather than bringing back the 2018 look.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's just the second BBC virtual set used for the Winter Olympics which I wouldn't be completely against - it generally looks pretty good in the various guises it has been used so far.

I suspect Dan Walker may be involved in the presentation this time around as he has said he isn't doing the Strictly tour due to prior work commitments, and I'd have thought three days a week on Breakfast was something they could work around. I would assume an almost identical schedule to 2018 with overnight coverage on BBC1, switching to BBC2 at 6am through to the end of the days events, and then highlights around 7pm - plus the limitation of just one additional stream, which most of the time they get away with until a three hour curling match comes along.

Yeah, I expect that Dan Walker will probably be involved with the Winter Olympics coverage in February - along with the usual suspects in Clare and Hazel. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if JJ Chalmers is on UK overnight duty again after how well he managed with the overnights for Tokyo, in what is (from a UK perspective) the graveyard slot

Sam Quek was one of the biggest surprises for me from the Tokyo line-up in terms of how well she did onscreen (and her pairing with Dan was great), but given how far along she'll be with her pregnancy by then, I don't think she'll be involved heavily with the coverage for Beijing

One of the reasons for the lack of announcements from broadcasters is that the IOC / BOCOG / Chinese Government have been very late in providing operational information to them about various things. This is affecting planning across different areas of the coverage. Bubble requirements are going to be much much stricter than Tokyo.

Equipment is being shipped on the basis that it might be needed, but equally it could be over speced and just sit there if things have to be scaled back. (ie a broadcaster can’t send people to a particular event and have to do more remotely, can’t have the same facilities they’d wanted or planned for, equally it has to be incase they can.)

Speaking to one of our regular freelancers who is due to be going, they still don’t know whether they will be or when they would need to be. It could be 2 weeks earlier or a few days later than the date they were originally given.

2 January, just a month and a couple of days from the start of the Winter Olympics, and not a word from the BBC about their coverage. Is this because the BBC themselves don't know what's happening?

I find this most odd.

2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 03-01-2022

They didn't issue the press release until the 11th January last time around so not too unusual to wait until after Christmas.

Last time around it was Clare, Hazel, Radzi and Elidah fronting coverage. Hopefully despite missing the snooker Hazel will be back to join Clare. Radzi will almost certainly be one of the Eurosport team, whilst I imagine Elidah will have football commitments elsewhere.

Obviously anchoring from the UK means those that have weekend commitments like the football or Six Nations could still be involved in some capacity, but I suspect we may see something similar to Tokyo with JJ Chalmers overnight and then a combination of Dan, Hazel and Clare during the day, with Clare also doing the highlights. If Hazel isn't involved I suspect Jason Mohammed may come in.

I think it may also be in doubt due to the impending worry of Omicron cases, and maybe some hosts who either are planned or the concern is there of them unfortunately catching even the worst of it?

I don't know, I'd imagine the BBC will only begin to announce what's there when they know it is safe to do so, with all the Covid situations being set before the issues arise.

2022 Winter Olympics - Meteor - 03-01-2022

PyeongChang started on the 9th oh February, so if they stick to that schedule, we'll get a press release any day now (Beijing beings on the 2nd).

I wonder if the BBC will have any in-country presence.

2022 Winter Olympics - UTVLifer - 03-01-2022

Who usually does the Opening/Closing Ceremonies commentary for the Winter Olympics, it's usually just Hazel isn't for the Winters these days isn't it?

In 2018, I think it was a mixture of John Hunt, Steve Cram and Sir Matt Pinsent. Hazel was back in the UK presenting the afternoon extended highlights then, but IIRC she was on commentary back in 2014.

2022 Winter Olympics - Brekkie - 03-01-2022

I think it varies - pretty sure in 2010 Hazel did the opening and Steve Cram did the closing. If Hazel wasn't able to present for the full fortnight even if they could involve her in just the ceremonies that would be welcome.
