I always liked those Carlton idents. Simple, fun and infinite number of possibilities. The sort of thing a channel should try again.

The Carlton idents were the best thing Carlton did.
Thames obviously was much better with everything else, but its identity was dated as hell, when it shut down

I thought they looked quite basic at the time, and they replaced the lovely rendered glass logo, but with hindsight, they were well ahead of their time, and really clever.

my opinion has almost gone 360 degrees, although for the time again, technically very good, they are a bit dull.
the carlton* idents were probably as good as it got for itv franchises.

For a terrible Thames replacement, they were definitely ahead of the curve with their idents
(except the 1995 idents, these weren’t even MADE by Lambie Nairn)

I have always loved the 1999 Carlton idents, they looked stunning, even if it cost us the Central & Westcountry names.
I actually think the 1995 Carlton idents (made by Central) were also quite nice, certainly very classy.

I agree that they were visually appealing, but they didn’t do anything, it was just a case of putting the word CARLTON in the middle of the screen and nothing else. Whereas each MLN package for Carlton had a meaning, without sounding like a marketing man. The 93 package was all about ‘Television for London’ and putting Londoners on screen. The 96 package explored what they could do with the Carlton logo and how London could be put into the identity as well as the programmes ITV offer. The 99 package was simply put as ‘if ITV is the heart, Carlton is the star’. Yes the latter was total BS but it had meaning.
The 1995 package is probably what Carlton secretly wanted, but it didn’t say anything about them, the other idents did.

Carlton had two great sets of idents with cut glass and 'Carlton' animations. But the cut glass Carlton logo was surpassed by the animated Carlton era. So clever and endless possibilities with what you could do with the letters.

I always thought the '95 ones were terrible (well made for the time though) as channel branding as they said absolutely nothing about a regional terrestrial television station. They were too corporate, neutral and more suited to Carlton's other ventures, like Cinema advertising, films, distribution or new non-terrestrial channels.
