Fun with Ad Breaks - reworP wehttaM - 16-10-2021

Recently (like 2010-onward), it seems like the UK's TV networks that aren't BBC have been a little cheeky with their advertisers on special occasions

For example, we have ITV's knitted ad break from 2016 for Text Santa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh4CuQNQBYc
Then there was Channel 4's Bank Holiday showdown with Ronseal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZmxBUVG7w4
And if we wanna get even more recent, this ad break for the Sonic Movie in which most of the ads were just plain skipped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riPX9A_A_bE

Any other examples of this phenomenon you wanna share?

I guess the first ever ad break on TV-am fits the genre

I remember some of these like the LEGO one on ITV back in 2014.

And there was the numerous 'hijacked' ad breaks during C4's Comedy Gala from 2010-2016 feauting Jimmy Carr and Alan Carr,

There was also another one from C4 in 2018 tackling online hate.

Another 80s example, from the great 'I bet he drinks Carling Black Label' campaign:

This one is from the recent Paralympics coverage on Channel 4 last month:

The most tedious one I can recall:

One time ITV got all their sponsors to participate in a big ol’ birthday message to the Queen, even: https://youtu.be/aDuNYG35RF4

and there was Channel 4’s partnership with McVitie’s that I really wish someone recorded and put on YouTube. https://www.4sales.com/our-work/mcvities-sweeetest-ever-ad-break

I wonder if Channel 5 got involved in any of this?

A few companies did special adverts especially for Channel 5's launch.

This one is probably the most straight-to-the-point as you can get

Granted, this was so everyone can stop looking at the screen and start talking to their compadre

You could probably fill this with First Direct adverts

And then there is this classic from The Beatles Anthology ad break

Channel 4 really loves doing this

Here's a signed ad break with some added twists based on the ad: https://vimeo.com/183829459

I can't find it on YouTube but remember a few years ago there was an ad break, possibly during X Factor, that was just all vintage Kellogg's adverts. Was great fun to see!

Taskmaster, airing it's 100th episode, just had a single ad from Google, which was a task using Google Translate featuring current contestant Desiree Burch and alumni Al Murray, labelled #Ad throughout.

Murray presumably there because, as established in the series of Taskmaster he did, he lives near the house.

I'm quite curious as to why a company like Google needs to advertise. Who could have been watching who was unaware of who they are and what they do...?
