Radio On Television - Teilifís - 30-03-2021
This is something that has fascinated me for quite a while as someone who has worked in both radio and television.

With radio studios such as LBC (above) updating new technology for the benefit of social media, streaming and video content, there is also, internationally, an increasing amount of radio shows being broadcast on television. Some are purely for filling time, others are essentially simulcasts, but

One of the first I recall seeing on the BBC in recent years was Radio 4's "The Bottom Line" with Evan Davis. Recently it has been joined by The Media Show.

Here in Ireland, Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1 is simulcast on the RTÉ News Channel in lieu of a breakfast show on RTÉ. The studio underwent a makeover around a decade ago purely to make it more TV friendly, but I've always been of the opinion that the RTÉ Radio Newsroom studio is a bit of a horrible looking space to broadcast on television, compared to some of those in the radio centre, which are brighter and more colourful.

I recall seeing daytime broadcasts in Norway as "radio on TV" too which I've struggled to see online.
I'd love to see more examples from across the globe, and to know your thoughts on what makes it work for you as a viewer.

Outside of news, The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X has really embraced the use of video (as it did in the later years of Radio 1 of course) and Global have spent a small fortune refurbishing Leicester Square (Heart and Capital in particular went through two refits in five years) making their studios look good on-camera.
Notts TV simulcast the breakfast show a few years ago, are they still doing that?

Whenever I think of radio on television my mind instantly goes to Chris Moyles’ Longest Show Ever, which was astonishingly 10 years ago (as mentioned above).
At the time it felt like such a novelty to tune in to *watch* someone host a radio show. Sure there was the Comic Relief element, but it was incredibly addictive. Plus, R1 were still in Yalding House at the time, broadcasting in studios that were in no way aesthetically pleasing or made for television broadcast.
Personally (apart from events like the above) I’m still a bit skeptical about radio on linear television - even as a lover of both. It works great for short social media clips as the bright, glossy studios catches your attention, but I still don’t see the appeal of watching a radio on TV where I can just pop the radio on and have pretty much the same experience.
Having said that, I’d give my arm to watch Ken Bruce whilst he does Popmaster...

Seem to recall reading about an early experiment in breakfast TV involving cameras in the Radio Scotland studio?
There used to be a permanent video feed of 5 Live available on their website.
Doesn't one of the BBC locals do something with their breakfast show on the local TV service?

When Radio 2 did some live 24 hour thing for Chikdren in Need the other year it was striking how dull and old fashioned their studios look. They're modern and functional for radio of course but not visual at all, the attempts to make it so looked awful.
When Simon Mayo started in GHR the other week they videoed it and put the opening out on social media and that too was far removed from Global's style, the studio looks so dull and tiny. I assume that some of the studios at Golden Square aren't that spacious as there's a lot of them in that small building, and it's not a dedicated GHR studio.
It might also just be the angle they've used but it's curious that a show that's broadcast so widely comes from such a studio. The GHR ones I've seen in their other centres, both local and network are a lot more flashy. Andy Crane has a much nicer studio!

Yes, BBC Radio Oxford, and the now defunct analogue local TV station (I can't remember its name?)
You're right, BBC Scotland did a week or two's experiment of having cameras in the radio studio, done in Edinburgh for some reason I think?

The Simon Mayo clip looks distinctly like a hand held camera rather than a permanent installation.
I wonder if that's a bit like the Tony Blackburn Radio 1 opening footage, mocked up for the cameras? I can't imagine Mayo doing that kind of show and not self opping, maybe they recorded it for posterity from the guest position in the studio with fewer screens and clutter?

RTL 102.5 (nothing to do with the other RTL) in Italy have a permanent visual radio channel available to watch online and on TV. It's quite an impressive set up. Music videos are played during songs, with slowly sweeping shots of the studio when the presenters are talking.

Talk Radio has full editions of their shows on their YouTube channel but I do agree that having cameras in the studio is great for segments and viral moments but surely no one will watch the entire show especially if it’s over 3 hours long.

Yes, the local tv station That’s Oxford paid for installation of a few cameras and some lights into one of the radio studios. There was auto cutting software which selected the camera pointing at the persons who’s mic had sound on it (worked quite well) and it was all inset into a box with weather and news headlines, fairly reminiscent of Birmingham’s Breakfast With Kay extravaganza of the early 2000s...

Wasn't RTE broadcast on RTE One in the morning for many years? I'm sure I remember it from holidays across the Irish Sea in the 90s and early 00s. I don't think it had a camera in the studio though, just pages from Aertel or maybe a static slide with RTE listings for the rest of the day.

Notts TV (my local channel) used to air the Gem radio breakfast show in the mornings using a live feed of their studio, of course it didn't always go exactly to plan as they did lose the feed quite a lot.
The closest thing now, is this Nottingham Nostalgia show which is like a radio show but it's only shown on TV, and last time I've watched it, it looks like it was set in somebody's home.

I believe in the early days of local TV, simulcasting a local radio show could count towards its quota of local programming and local news, so it was worth doing. Since the requirements have been significantly relaxed, I presume it’s not worth bothering with anymore.
