But sources close to the 61-year-old music mogul believe The X Factor is “unlikely” to return to UK screens.

A show insider said of X Factor: “Globally, it is still a phenomenon and rakes in millions every year. But in the UK, there is no question it has become slightly stale.
“Simon remains at the top of his game and knows how to make a hit. He owns the rights to the show, and it’s his call — not ITV’s — whether or not he drops it.
“Clearly the last thing he wants is for X Factor to fizzle out with a whimper and become a bit of a joke — especially in contrast to the show in its pomp.
“It is still on the back-burner and there’s the option to return it in 2023, with auditions next summer, but a lot will ride on his new format Walk The Line.”
Would laugh if Walk The Line backfires on Cowell, sounds like an odd format.

Don’t we go through this pretty much every year? I’m going to take a wild guess that The X Factor is as ‘axed’ as it apparently was in 2020, in 2019 and in 2018 without any official word from ITV. If Cowell does choose to pull the plug then fair enough and good decision but yes, smells like clickbait to me.

The story is probably true. The Sun has always been very close to Simon Cowell.
The X Factor was unlikely to return as the last few series had little impact. I suspect there may be an element of Simon getting his side of the story out first by making it look like it was his decision and not ITV's.

It’s been axed, but it already was axed as it didn’t air last year, but they may bring it back, which they may always have done.

Bit strange, I don’t think there are any other TV producers that get people relishing the prospect of their new show flopping before a single frame has been shot.
As for X Factor, as others have said it’s not really news as the regular version has been off air since 2018. We knew it wasn’t coming back this year and probably wouldn’t next year because of the Nov/Dec World Cup.
A 20th anniversary revival in 2024 is my guess.

Regardless of your opinion on this show and whether this announcement was long overdue or not. This is sad news. The show employed hundreds of people, hundreds of people who are now out of a job. Anytime that’s difficult, but during a pandemic it can only be more gut wrenching.

Considering the show hasn’t aired since 2018, I doubt any employees have been directly affected by this “news”. Apart from a few minimal roles which may roll on in an open ended fashion, shows like The X Factor run off freelancers hired for a series (and I mean that in the sense of a US season) who come on board at various points during the production process, and then move on to other projects as soon as that specific series ends. They then may or may not return the following year for the next series, depending on their other work commitments.
Your point would have been valid in 2018 as I’m sure many freelancers did depend on that contract and assumed they’d be offered the same job each year, just like with any other long running shows which were axed like Big Brother or the original run of Dancing on Ice. But I assure you that no one is directly “out of a job” today because this show isn’t coming back.

So here’s a question: What was the last Syco format to last more than a couple of series in the UK?
I reckon it’s BGT, from something like 15 years ago. As far as I can remember, Syco’s other formats have rather missed the mark after being predicted to be the next big thing… Red or Black?, Food Glorious Food, The Greatest Dancer, Grease is the Word… but willing to be proved wrong!
Of course, TV formats are a fickle business and perhaps the new one will buck the trend—but it’s a bit tiresome to read coverage that seems to be predicated on the assumption that Syco shows are all big hits.
