O'Connor was best known for presenting game shows such as Tyne Tees' Crosswits, Pick Pockets (an early version of the BBC's Big Break), The Zodiac Game, Name That Tune, Password and Gambit.

Very sad news, one of my earliest memories of watching telly was watching him on Crosswits, it started my obsession with game/quiz shows in a way, a true gentleman of entertainment.

As the TV reviewer in Private Eye said at the time "Crosswits starring Tom O'connor and his amazing collection of 1970's sweaters"

Rip Tom

I didn’t realise Barry Cryer presented the first few series of Crosswits. Not sure I’ve ever seen a clip of that.

Lovely lovely man and had the great pleasure of working with him at Tyne Tees in the 80's.

Rest in Peace and "Never a Cross Word"

I didn't realise that either though it looks like his series may only have aired in the Tyne Tees region.

Very sad news. Grew up watching Crosswits, he was such a superb gameshow host.

Pick Pockets was apparently an untransmitted pilot for Tyne Tees in 1988.

I was about 4 or 5 when Crosswits was shown on UTV. Didn't know much about crosswords then.

He's one of those people who I assumed had passed away years ago. I remember him most as host of Cross Wits, a big favourite game show on our house.

It was only today I found out that his daughter in law is Denise Lewis.

We did two pilots of pick pockets at Tyne Tees in the late 80's but it never seemed to work in the format that existed for those.

A few years later it ended up on the BBC as Big Break.

I also recall the Barry Cryer version of CrossWits but it is lovely that the network version with Tom is still on TV now.

Sad news. He was great on Crosswits and also was a frequent face on Countdown’s Dictionary Corner.

Indeed he managed to get tit for tat by being in Dictionary Corner and subsequently getting Richard and Carol to travel up the A1(M) to Tyne Tees to pit it out as contestants on Crosswits. I only watched this video yesterday so sad coincidence for Tom to die the same weekend.

Yes Crosswits was a Staple of 925am back in the day, the perfect slot for a gentle mind game.

As for The Zodiac Game...  let's say that's best left in the 80s with the likes of Ultra Quiz!

Rest gently Tom
