Tvam- Timeslot - Newsdog - 02-06-2021 I believe when TVAM first started they had the network from 6am -9:15am seven days a week ( extended after a few months to end at 9.25-am). However often they would not come on air until 7am on Sunday’s and after a few months cut back to starting from 6.25am on weekdays. Did anything go out on ITV from 6am until TVAM started up? I’ve seen on you tube lots of ‘TVAM starts at 6:55am’ slides with an IBA logo on them. I’m guessing these were broadcast from TVAM or did IBA control the airtime from 6am until the station actually started up? Tvam- Timeslot - James Martin - 02-06-2021 Good question - in the days of manual switching I imagine the slide originated from Camden Lock. That might have changed once the process was automated at all sites. Extended to 9:25am in May 1983 once automation had been setup (remember TV-am launched earlier than expected, 1st Feb as opposed to what was planned, June 1st, so the handover back to the regions at 9:15 had to be done manually, or relatively manually anyway until the upgrade had been done). . 5:55am was for the startup sequences/testing/whatever, for a 6am start. Believe the IBA slides would have appeared from 6am and most likely Camden Lock, no real difference I would have thought to when they pushed the weekday offerings start time to 6:25am to save money. Of course before TV-am was a thing most regions could start whenever they liked. IIRC it was Yorkshire TV that did a pilot for a breakfast TV style show in the late 1970s but it didn't last long. Yes, Breakfast TV really is that young compared to the rest of the schedule, 38 years this year since regular programming started at breakfast time. It had appeared off and on before TV-am but certainly wasn't a regular thing. Tvam- Timeslot - James Martin - 02-06-2021 1977 - not sure if there's a clip still online but Bob Warman is leading on the Teneriefe KLM/Pan Am 747 collision which helps date it. Came on at 8:30 which is a bit late for brekkie telly. And why over complicate things any other way? ITV closed down over night so there was no need to do any switching at a certain time. They could just put TVam onto it's distribution at some point after closedown in preparation for the morning Tvam- Timeslot - Si-Co - 03-06-2021 James Martin post_id=16149 time=1622669596 user_id=872 Wrote:1977 - not sure if there's a clip still online but Bob Warman is leading on the Teneriefe KLM/Pan Am 747 collision which helps date it. 8.30am was a bit of an odd time to show such a programme - I’m not sure who their target demographic was meant to be. Most people would be on their way to work, many mums would be doing the school run/walking their kids to school. Good Friday was 8th April, so most schools probably wouldn’t have broken up for Easter until the following week. They may have picked up a few extra viewers over the holidays, only to lose them again. Tyne Tees ran a similar “Good Morning North East” programme at the same time, but I’m not aware of who presented it and how similar it was to YTV’s offering. Tvam- Timeslot - James2001 - 03-06-2021 This video begins with black & tone and a non-sync cut to the IBA card, no that it gives any idea where the black and tone was coming from, possibly the non-sync cut is the switch being thrown over to Camden? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB6mDUBb_gw Tvam- Timeslot - Markymark - 03-06-2021 Si-Co post_id=16307 time=1622711692 user_id=1388 Wrote:James Martin post_id=16149 time=1622669596 user_id=872 Wrote:1977 - not sure if there's a clip still online but Bob Warman is leading on the Teneriefe KLM/Pan Am 747 collision which helps date it. I suspect overtime costs and manning etc came a great deal into it ? Some ITV companies did open up earlier than 9:30 from time to time in the the pre-Tv-am days, (for instance LWT would often show Sesame Street at 08:30 on Saturdays) I don't ever recall any ITV company ever opening up before 08:30 ? Tvam- Timeslot - Hatton Cross - 03-06-2021 8.30am start smacks of a union decision, rather than a programming one. At the other end of the day, I recall 23:30hrs being some sort threshold for the BBC ? If they were having any, 'industrial issues' the first thing that seemed to happen was BBC 1 and 2 would close down on or before that time ? (Why does the very last image on that video make me think of 'This Time' ? Tvam- Timeslot - JK1985 - 03-06-2021 Please remember that in 1983 when TV-am launched, they went head first down the toilet financially, as their programme failed in the ratings. This would be the main reason for a stringent cut back in their broadcasting hours. They launched on Tuesday February 1st 1983, however their choice of style for TV-am was far too heavy of a morning, news driven, political focused, and sorry to say just dead boring. The very first interview David Frost did on Day 1 was with Norman Tebbit about unemployment - just what you want/need to launch your breakfast service on Day 1. They counter balanced it with John Cleese appearing later on, but the damage was done on Day 1. The devoted a whole one hour to news, business and farming from 6am to 7am with Robert Kee anchoring, who looked like he never knew how to hold his script when on camera. Weather was delivered by an ex-RAF officer Commander Philpott bellowing the weather at the viewer as if they were one his his first year cadets. All of this lead to viewers deserting them for the more safer and reassuring BBC Breakfast Time with Frank Bough, Selina Scott and Nick Ross on BBC One, in their jumpers and nice sofa arrangement. By March 1983 TV-am had got to the point where basically 100,000 viewers were watching every morning, compared to the near 3 million on BBC One. Did they used to switch on with video or was there a period before video was added? |
